Opening weekend of the 2024/25 season is in the history books.

The questions that all us fans have, started to get answered. Now we have new questions to replace them, and the cycle of fandom continues.

The very first game of the season, might end up being the “Game of the Year”, when it’s all said and done. The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Baltimore Ravens 27-20, in a game that came down to the final play of the game. QB Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid, continue to prove why they are the best HC and QB in the league. Defending NFL MVP Lamar Jackson threw for 273 yards, as well as led the team in rushing with 112 yards. The “big signing” of Derek Henry ended up being a popcorn fart in the first game. He finished with only 46 yards, on 13 carries.

The Green Bay Packers and the Philadelphia Eagles played in Sao Paulo, Brazil (which is absolutely stupid, and they should never do it again). Over 47,000 were treated to a good game, as the Eagles won 34-29. It was overshadowed by the injury to GB QB Jordan Love in the final seconds. He threw for 260 yards and 2 touchdowns. WR Jayden Reed had a great game for the Packers, finishing with 138 yards and a touchdown on only 4 catches. Philly QB Jalen Hurts threw for 278 yards and 2 touchdowns as well. He unfortunately threw 2 INTs and had 2 fumbles (he lost 1). Eagles HB Saquon Barkley had 109 yards on 24 carries. He finished the game with 2 rushing touchdowns and 1 receiving touchdown.

The Cincinnati Bengals and Pro-Bowl QB Joe Burrow couldn’t start the season with a win if you paid them to. They’ve gotten off to another slow start, losing to the New England Patriots 16-10. While it was disappointing to Bengals fans, it was a great win for Patriots fans. Jerod Mayo got his very first win as an NFL head coach.

The Pittsburgh Steelers ending up starting Justin Fields at quarterback instead of Russell Wilson, who had a calf injury. Fields threw for 156 yards and ran for 57 yards as well. Pittsburgh went down south and beat the Atlanta Falcons 18-10. QB Kirk Cousins threw 2 INTs in his team debut, and HB Bijan Robinson couldn’t get going. He ran for 68 yards on 18 carries.

3 rookies quarterbacks started the season. That’s the 3rd time in 4 years. Caleb Williams became the first quarterback drafted at #1 overall, to win his NFL debut since 2002. The Chicago Bears were down 17-0 at one point and came back for the big win. They may have won the game, but he and the offense looked horrible. It was the defense (a Tyrique Stevenson) 43-yard pick six, and a blocked punt, led the way.

Bo Nix threw for 138 yards with 2 INTs for the Denver Broncos, and Jayden Daniels threw for 184 yards, but was running for his life. Daniels had 88 yards on the ground for the Washington Commanders.

Aaron Rodgers started for and played his 1st full regular game for the New York Jets. He went 13 of 21 for 167 yards, with 1 TD and 1 INT. He heavily favored WRs Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard, as they had a combined 20 targets. Brock Purdy had a good game, throwing for 231 yards. The story of the game though was HB Jordan Mason, who had a career game. 28 carries, for 147 yards and 1 touchdown.

It was actually Baker Mayfield who had the best 1st game of any quarterback in the league in Week 1. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the reigning and defending NFC South Champions. He went 24 of 30, for 289 yards and 4 TDs with 0 INTs. He spread the ball out, hitting 7 different receivers.

The Las Vegas Raiders (it will always be Oakland to me) and the Los Angeles Chargers (it will always be San Diego to me), got into a “fight” in Sunday’s game. It was mostly just some pushing and shoving, with the usual trash talking. The Chiefs are so dominate in the division, they had to find some way to get people talking about them. They don’t play again until the final week of the season in Las Vegas.

We continue to learn that my Cleveland Browns made the dumbest trade in the history of the NFL, as QB Deshaun Watson continues to struggle on the field…..whenever he’s actually playing in a game. The Dallas Cowboys controlled the game from the start, as QB Dak Prescott, WR CeeDee Lamb, and DE Micah Parsons look to earn their money this season.

We also learned that the league and officials have a bug up their butts, about “illegal formation”, as they threw more than 20 flags on that alone. The referees were busy in Week 1, as they continue to use the first game to emphasize which rules they want to enforce this year.

Am I the only one who thinks the new “kickoff rules and formations” look weird and are just plain dumb? Maybe it’ll grow on me, I don’t know. It just doesn’t sit right with me.

Week 2 is just around the corner.

Quote of the week

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
