Week 2 of the college football season is over, and what an interesting week it turned out to be.
Some of the top teams in the country, continued to play some “easy, warm-up games”. The #2 Ohio State Buckeyes laid a butt whooping on unranked Western Michigan 56-0. True freshman WR Jeremiah Smith had another big game, finishing with 119 yards on 5 catches, and a touchdown. The Buckeyes running game showed up, as both HB’s Henderson and Judkins had 2 rushing touchdowns. Even 3rd string (for now) QB Julian Sayin got a few reps in.
It took a BIG 4th quarter for #4 Alabama Crimson Tide to finally put away unranked USF Bulls, in Tuscaloosa. Alabama only had a one-point lead going into the final quarter of the game. 28 points later, the Crimson Tide were walking into the tunnel with a 42-16 win. My Heisman pick QB Jalen Milroe had 4 total touchdowns, two passing and two rushing.
The “big news” for the media and anyone who doesn’t pay attention, is that the #3 Texas Longhorns went into “The Big House” and dominated #10 Michigan Wolverines, beating them soundly 31-12.
Firstly, I predicted that this was exactly what was going to happen, in last week’s article.
The truth of it is that the Wolverines are not in the same class with Texas. They’ve lost too much to the NFL and graduation. The massive loss in this game has cost them a few recruits. We all knew that Michigan was going to take a step back this season, but most people didn’t think they’d drop off this badly. They couldn’t stay out of their own way, as they had 3 total turnovers and were overmatched both on the field and on the sidelines under the headsets.
That also shouldn’t take away from what Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has been able to build down in Austin. They were a lost program after the departure of Mack Brown. It took some time, but the move to the SEC might have been the move needed to kick it all into overdrive. QB Quinn Ewers had another good game, throwing for 246 yards and three touchdowns.
The Almost Upsets.
The #8 Penn State Nittany Lions had their hand full in “Happy Valley”. The unranked Bowling Green Falcons led most of the game, but ultimately falling 34-27. Falcons two-time transfer quarterback Connor Bazelak threw for 254 yards and two touchdowns, but he had 2 interceptions. Penn State’s two star running backs each had over 100 yards rushing. Nicolas Singleton ran for 119 yards and a touchdown, while Kaytron Allen ran for 101 yards. QB Drew Allar threw for 204 yards with 2 touchdowns and a pick.
It wasn’t the best showing for the Nittany Lions, but the Bowling Green Falcons showed that even without their starting running back, they are still a dangerous team. Penn State is off next week, and then play another MAC school in Kent State. They need to find some answers in the off week. Bowling Green travels down take on Texas A&M. Will there be a “let down” or will the Falcons, get the job done in two weeks.

The #7 Oregon Ducks once again struggled, and it took a game winning FG with no time remaining to beat the Boise State Broncos 37-36, at Autzen Stadium.
Ducks head coach Dan Lanning better figure things out fast. They play the Oregon State Beavers next, in what COULD be the final Civil War Trophy Game we ever see, thanks to conference realignment.
The “Ummmm who didn’t see that coming”.
The #14 Tennessee Volunteers beat the snot out of the #24 NC State Wolfpack. Even with the Wolfpack getting transfer QB Grayson McCall to come play for them, they were severely overmatched here. The speed of the Tennessee offense and defense was just too much for them. I like NC State head coach Dave Doeren, but when it comes to the offensive side of the ball, there are very few better than Volunteers head coach Josh Heupel.
HISTORICAL UPSET!!!
The #5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish lost to the lowly, unranked, Northern Illinois Huskies 16-14.
The Fighting Irish simply do not know what kind of team they want to be. Just last Saturday night, they went down to Kyle Field and won a gritty, hard-nosed game against Texas A&M.
Why head coach Marcus Freeman didn’t let HB Jeremiyah Love “cook” more, I can’t understand. He was the only player getting anything done.
The Fighting Irish were just beaten all game long, on the offensive and defensive lines. Northen Illinois ran for 190 yards on offense, and the constant pressure on ND QB Riley Leonard, forced him into throwing two interceptions. He’s a graduate transfer from Duke Blue Devils, who was brought in to take them over the hump.
This is the FIRST TIME that Northern Illinois has ever beaten an AP Top 10 ranked team.
Congratulations to Head Coach Thomas Hammock and his staff, on a historical win, and hopefully a springboard for the Huskies, on and off the field.
Top 25 Close Calls.
#15 Oklahoma Sooners beat Houston Cougars 15-12.
#16 Oklahoma State Cowboys beat Arkansas Razorbacks 39-31 in double overtime.
#17 Kansas State Wildcats beat Tulane Green Wave 34-27.
#20 Arizona Wildcats beat Northern Arizona 22-11.
Top 25 Upsets.
Iowa State Cyclones defeated the #21 Iowa Hawkeyes 20-19.
The Cy-Hawk Trophy will be going to Ames, Iowa once again. The Cyclones have won 2 of the last 3 games in this rivalry.
Syracuse Orange defeated the #23 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 31-28.
GT had some big momentum coming into the game, after defeating a Top 10 ranked team in FSU, but the Orange have vastly improved quarterback play by former Ohio State transfer Kyle McCord. He threw for 381 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Will you just shut up about it already!
Nebraska Cornhuskers QB Dylan Raiola does not look like Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes.
It was a great Week 2. All of us fans love to see upsets and see the “blue bloods” get a wakeup call.
