What an exciting Week 1 of the college football season.

It was everything I expected.

We got the usual blowouts. Like #15 Tennessee beating Chattanooga 69-3. #18 Kansas State beating UT Martin 41-6. #16 Oklahoma beating Temple 51-3.

We got a big upset when the Vanderbilt Commodores beat the Virginia Tech Hokies 34-27 in overtime. Vanderbilt was picked by almost everyone to finish last in the SEC conference, while Virginia Tech was a trendy pick to win the ACC. Let’s all be honest. Part of the reason we all love Week 1, is because there are always upsets early in the season. Vandy plays Alcorn State and Georgia State in their next 2 games. They have a legitimate chance to be 3-0 when they play their conference opener in Week 4.

The Real Top 10.

  1. Georgia Bulldogs. It took a half before they got in their groove, but they made it look easy against #14 Clemson.
  2. Ohio State Buckeyes. Again, it took a half for the team to get going. QB Will Howard did exactly what he’s supposed to do. True freshman WR Jeremiah Smith is the next NFL talent to come out of WR U.
  3. Alabama Crimson Tide. They still have QB Jalen Milroe and a lot of talent. They took care of business against WKU winning 63-0.
  4. Oregon Ducks. They barely squeaked by FCS powerhouse and 7th ranked Idaho Vandals. That doesn’t concern me though. Dan Lanning has built a deep program in Eugene. They’ll be just fine.
  5. Texas Longhorns. They looked just fine against CSU. Even QB Arch Manning got some much needed game reps.
  6. Ole Miss Rebels. Jaxon Dart accounted for 6 first half touchdowns, as they blew away FCS Furman.
  7. Notre Dame Fighting Irish. They looked tough and gritty in a hard fought, road win against #20 Texas A&M 23-13.
  8. Penn State Nittany Lions. Like others, it took them a half to get going, then after a 2-hour rain delay, they came out and beat up on West Virginia.
  9. Missouri Tigers. They have a top-notch QB-WR combo and a manageable schedule.
  10. Utah Utes. QB Cam Rising returned from injury and looked like they hadn’t missed a beat. They’re always a tough out for any team.

The Game of the Week.

The #23 USC Trojans and #13 LSU Tigers played a hellava game on Sunday Night. Trojans QB Miller Moss was tasked with replacing a former Heisman Trophy winner at quarterback. On the primetime stage, he went out and threw for 378 yards and a touchdown. He was absolutely clutch when they needed him most, at the end of the game and also at the end of the first half.

The #19 Miami Hurricanes went into “The Swamp” and beat the living crap out of unranked Florida. The Gators aren’t exactly a good team, but the Hurricanes also have a habit of choking in meaningful games. Transfer QB Cam Ward threw for 385 yards and 3 touchdowns. Could he be the answer to Miami’s quarterback woes?

The best of Week 2.

The “Game of the Week” is the #4 Texas Longhorns taking on the #9 Michigan Wolverines, in Ann Arbor.

Prediction – This is going to be an ugly game at The Big House. The Longhorns come in and lay a spanking on the Wolverines by at least 20 points.

#3 Oregon Ducks will host the unranked Boise State Broncos. Could this be a preview of a future college football playoff match? A lot of people think that Boise could end up getting the G5 spot.

Prediction – The Broncos will keep it close in the first half, then Oregon’s depth will show up in the fourth quarter. The Ducks will win by double digits.

The #15 Tennessee Volunteers travel to Charlotte, to take on the #24 North Carolina State Wolfpack. Volunteers QB Nico Iamaleava threw for over 300 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Wolfpack transfer QB Grayson McCall did the exact same thing. 300+ and 3 tuddies.

Prediction – The Volunteers have way too much speed for the Wolfpack to handle. McCall keep them in the game as best he can, but it will be for naught. Tennessee wins 42-28.

For the most part, Week 2 is a cool down from Week 1. It doesn’t matter though, because it’s so great that college football is back.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
