Its only the preseason, but it’s hard to imagine that after Trey Lance’s disappointing performance, in game one to supplement himself as Cowboys backup quarterback, Dak Prescott might have more leverage, in getting a long term deal with the Cowboys.

Entering the final year of his contract with the Cowboys, Prescott no doubt is looking to be the first quarterback to make $60 million dollars a year, and Trey Lance showed no signs, that if the Cowboys lose Prescott next year, he can take over the reigns.

Its hard to envision Lance sticking around in Dallas past 2024, however Jerry Jones and the front office don’t want to cut Lance before the season starts, if they aren’t’ able to secure a deal with Prescott before the season opener. But if they are committed to Prescott for the future, now would be the perfect time to deal Trey Lance.

One of the teams who will be looking for a quarterback, are the Minnesota Vikings.

Over this past weekend, it was revealed that Rookie Quarterback J.J. McCarthy tore his meniscus, and will have surgery, and is out for the season. As of know Sam Darnold, will be the starting quarterback. But that doesn’t scare defenses at all.

As McCarthy wasn’t expected to start Week 1 as Darnold, has taken all the first team snaps so far in training camp, this is still a big blow to the Vikings. The plan was to integrate McCarthy into the lineup slowly. Behind Donald the other backup is Chris Mullens, and Jaren Hall.

While Lance showed some flashes with his running ability, he overthrew wide open receivers all game one which was, probably why the 49ers traded him to the Cowboys. Yesterday in their 27-12 win over the Raiders, Trey was better, but still looked like a back-up quarterback. You can get more information on the Dallas win here from one of our other Cowboy writers. He did complete 15 of 23 passes for 151 yards and rushed for another 34 yards.

He is good enough to be a back-up quarterback for Dallas, but he may have shown that is also good enough to be a starter for a few other teams.

Its a stretch for the Vikings, to ask for a Lance Trade but McCarthy’s unfortunate injury, might get the Vikings to call the Cowboys to ask for a trade. And as the preseason turns into the regular season, Trey Lance may turn some heads.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
