The St. Louis Cardinals come to Great American Ballpark to play a 3 game series versus the Cincinnati Reds. Sonny Gray makes his return to Cincinnati as a visitor, playing against the team where he revitalized his career. The Reds are looking to stay alive in the Wild Card chase.

Game 1:

The Cardinals would jump ahead in the 3rd inning on a RBI single from Nolan Arenado. The Reds would come right back in the 4th and take the lead. Spencer Steer would launch a 2 run home run off Gray to give the Reds a 2-1 lead. The next pitch, Elly De La Cruz would take Gray deep to right, extending the lead to 3-1.

In the 5th, Spencer Steer would go deep for a 2nd time, this time a 3 run home run to extend the Reds lead to 6-1. This was Steers’ first career multi home run game. Andrew Abbott would have a really good game in this one. He would go 6.2 innings, allow 5 hits, 1 run, walk 2 and strike out 6. Jakob Junis would pitch 2.1 scoreless innings in relief of Abbott to seal the Reds win.

The Reds finally get some runs on the board, after a tough series in Milwaukee where runs were at a premium.

The Reds sweep the Cardinals at home and are now just 1 game below .500. The Reds have a chance to go over .500 this weekend for the first time since the first week of May in a series vs the Orioles where they would be swept and begin a horrific month of May.

The Reds have an off day on Thursday, then the Kansas City Royals come to town for a weekend series. Former Red Micheal Lorenzen is scheduled to start versus Nick Martinez. Based on the last few starts for each pitcher, this should be a pitchers duel. Lorenzen has a 2.25 ERA in his last 3 appearances and Nick Martinez has been spectacular. Martinez has allowed 7 hits in his last 3 starts and has a 0.69 ERA in that stretch. Martinez struggled to start the season, then pitched very well once moved to a long relief role. Martinez is proving now that he can start and be more than just reliable.
