In a wild fight that lived up to the hype, Vergil Ortiz came off the canvas twice to earn a majority decision win over Serhii Bohachuk in what turned to be a Fight of the Year candidate. The fight was the first time Ortiz won a fight that didn’t end in a knockout, ending his KO streak at 21.

The fight featured beavy blows by both fighters, with Bohachuk proving to be an immovable object, not being phased by Ortiz’s power, and coming back with hard shots of his own.

The fight began with an early round knockdown by Bohachuk, but it was initially ruled a slip by referee Harvey Dock. However, it would be overturned by replay officials after they saw Bohachuk clearly landed a right hand to Ortiz’ head.

As the fight went on, both fighters exchange blows in fierce exchanges, with neither fighter backing off. Bohachuk’s punches started to show on Ortiz’s face, especially over his left eye. But Ortiz’s strength and power started to gradually weaken Bohachuk as the bout progressed. Bohachuk, however, did have one more moment in the 8th round where he floored Ortiz a second time.

Ortiz showed the will and resolve to keep fighting as both fighters continued to exchange fierce blows. However, in the 11th and 12th rounds, when he needed to win the rounds, Ortiz stepped up and began to hurt Bohachuk. But even then, big punches by both fighters in the closing seconds, bringing the crown to their feet as the final bell sounded.

The win gave Ortiz an “interim belt” as he now looks to bigger and better things. But, after this tremendous fight, anything other than a rematch between these two warriors will be viewed as unacceptable at this point.

Let’s run this back one more time, shall we?
