The San Francisco Giants travel to Cincinnati to take on the Cincinnati Reds for a 3 game weekend series. Both teams are fighting to keep a chance of a Wild Card spot for a playoff birth.
Game 1:
Blake Snell would get the start for the Giants against Andrew Abbott for Cincinnati. Top of the 2nd inning, Casey Schmitt hit a solo home run off Abbott to give San Francisco a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Tyler Fitzgerald would hit an RBI double to give them a 2-0 lead. Blake Snell brought his best stuff out on Friday Night. The Reds broke up a perfect game chance by Snell, but are still without hit. In the 7th, Tyler Fitzgerald would hit a solo home run to deep left, to extend the Giants lead to 3-0. Blake Snell would pitch into the 9th inning for the first time in his career, and would finish off his no hit bit with Elly De La Cruz laying claim to the final out, a flyout to right center. The Reds have been no hit 4 times since 2010, twice in the David Bell era.

Andrew Abbott has struggled over his last few starts after getting off to a hot start to the season. Abbott would only go 4.1 innings, giving up 7 hits, 2 earned runs 8K’s and 1 walk. Abbott appears to be showing signs of fatigue that plagued him towards the end of last season. His next couple of starts will be pivotal.

Game 2:
Hunter Greene gets the start for the against Kyle Harrison for the Giants. Greene comes off of a snub for NL Pitcher of the Month. Greene went 3-0 with a 0.45 ERA 7 hits and 24K’s. Greene is proving to be the ace of this pitching staff for Cincinnati and one of the best pitchers in baseball this season. After a scoreless 1st inning, Tyler Stephenson took Harrison deep to right center to give the Reds a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the 3rd the Reds played long ball again. Jonathan India launched a ball into the bleachers in the upper deck extending the Reds lead to 2-0. In the 4th, The Reds decided to double to long ball. Tyler Stephenson crushed his second home run of the game to deep center to give the Reds a 5-0 lead. Later, Stuart Fairchild lined a solo shot off the foul pole, giving the Reds a 6-0 lead.
Hunter Greene was spectacular again, going 6 innings, no runs allowed and 11 strikeouts. Dominant stuff from Greene Saturday. In the 7th, the Giants would go “back to back”. Matt Chapman would hit a “little league” home run on a fielding error by TJ Friedl and a throwing error by Elly De La Cruz and Michael Conforto going over the left field wall off Justin Wilson to cut the lead to 6-2. Jerar Encarnacion would take Tony Santillan deep and in the 9th Matt Chapman would take Alexis Diaz deep to cut the Reds lead to 6-4 but Diaz would get the save as the Reds win 6-4.

Game 3:
Carson Spiers is pitching Sunday against veteran Robbie Ray for San Francisco. The Reds would get ahead early in the 2nd. Jeimer Candelario and Santiago Espinal would go back to back to give the Reds a 2-0 lead.
Candelario tied Elly De La Cruz for the team lead with his 18th of the season and Santiago Espinal set a career high today in home runs and stolen bases. Elly De La Cruz would get his 56th and 57th stolen base today. His first stolen base today, he would advance to third on an over through by the catcher Curt Casali. The Reds would fail to score Elly. Carson Spiers would give up a 2 run home run to Matt Chapman to tie the game in the 4th. Santiago Espinal would steal 2 bags in the 5th, but would not score. The Giants would take the lead in the 6th on a LaMonte Wade Jr fence scraper in right, San Francisco lead 3-2 and wouldn’t look back. The Giants would score 5 in the 8th. The Reds fall short and lose the series.

The Reds travel to Miami Monday to take on the Marlins. The Reds took 2 out of 3 at home versus Miami before the All-Star break. The Reds are currently in last place in the NL Central and 6.5 games out of the Wild Card.
