Terence Crawford was looking to be a part of rare boxing history Saturday night.   Going into his super welterweight showdown with champion Israil Madrimov, he was looking to join a select group of all-time elite fighters to win world championships in at least four weight divisions.

Saturday night, that feat was accomplished.

In a chess match for the boxing purists, Crawford edged out Madrimov in a unanimous decision win, which gave him that fourth championship. He becomes one of a handful of champions to win titles from lightweight to super welterweight. The list includes all-time greats like Roberto Duran, Oscar De La Hoya, and Pernell Whitaker.

The fight was more of a chess match as both fighters displayed specific skills that led both fighters to undefeated records heading into the match-up. A close, competitive fight where both fighters had their moments early, landing solid punches as many of the rounds were tough to score early on. Madrimov showed he was very fundamentally sound himself, landing shots of his own to keep Crawford on the defensive, while Crawford showed some ring rust after not fighting in over a year.

As the rounds went on, Crawford started to solve Madrimov’s style and began landing with more consistency, with Madrimov’s face beginning to show signs of swelling. In a fight that was close going into the championship rounds, Crawford started to take over by landing the more significant blows to earn the unanimous decision on the scorecards of 116-112 and 115-113 (twice), which won him a championship belt in a fourth weight class, putting him in some elite company all-time.

Say what you want, but Crawford is a generational talent in the sport, and he showed why he’s one of the pound for pound best, and will be recognized as one of the greats when his career is over. He showed it again on Saturday night against a very sound opponent.
