The Chicago Cubs are visiting Great American BallPark to take on the Reds for a 3 game series. The two teams are fighting to avoid last place in the division, but both are only a hand full of spots out of a playoff race. Tuesday July 30th was the MLB trade deadline and the Reds made a couple of minor moves, but didn’t commit to a full sale or buy in. Lucas Sims was traded to Boston for 19 year old Ovis Portes. Austin Slater and Livan Soto were traded to Baltimore for cash considerations, and Frankie Montas was traded on Monday to Milwaukee for Jakob Junis and Joey Wiemer.

Game 1:

Carson Spiers pitched Monday night against Jameson Taillon. After a scoreless first inning, Will Benson puts the Reds on the board with a 2 run bomb to right field to give the Reds a 2-0 lead. That was Benson’s career best 12th home run of the season.

The Reds would score another run in the 3rd on a wild pitch, scoring Spencer Steer from 3rd. In the 5th TJ Friedl would rip a 3 run home run, extending the Reds lead to 6-0. The Reds would add 1 more in the 8th on a Jeimer Candelario blast, Reds are up 7-0.

The Cubs would get 1 run on a Michael Busch home run but would fall short. Reds win 7-1.

Carson Spiers has been a real reliable option in the rotation, showing that he can more than a long relief option out of the bullpen.

BOX SCORE STANDOUTS:

Will Benson: 1-4 HR(12) 2RBI

TJ Friedl: 1-4 HR(5) 3RBI

Santiago Espinal: 1-3

Winning Pitcher: Carson Spiers (4-2 3.46 ERA)

Tuesday Starters:

Tony Santillan (opener)

Justin Steele

Game 2:

The Reds are going with a bullpen day on deadline day with Tony Santillan getting the start against Justin Steele. The Reds would get to Steele early. After working the bases loaded, TJ Friedl would loop a single over the leaping Swanson, to give the Reds an early 2-0 lead.

After a scoreless inning by Nick Martinez, Santiago Espinal would hit a 2 run home run to right field, giving Cincinnati a 4-0 lead. Espinal has tied his career high with 7 home runs this season. Later in the inning, Tyler Stephenson lined a single into left field, scoring the runner from second to extend their lead to 5-0.

The Cubs would get a couple back in the 6th. Cody Bellinger continues to mash in Great American Ballpark, ripping a 2 run home run off recently promoted Lyon Richardson, Reds lead 5-2. The Cubs would get another run in the 7th on a wild pitch from Fernando Cruz, it’s a 5-3 game now. Spencer Steer would give the Reds a needed insurance run in the 8th, squeezing a ball fair for a RBI double, giving the Reds a 6-3 lead. Alexis Diaz would shut the door for the save in the 9th, Reds win 6-3.

BOX SCORE STANDOUTS:

Tyler Stephenson: 3-5 RBI, R

Santiago Espinal: 4-4 2 2B, HR(7) [Triple short of cycle]

TJ Friedl: 2-3 BB, 2RBI

Winning Pitcher: Nick Martinez (5-5 3.58 ERA)

Losing Pitcher: Justin Steele (2-5 3.38 ERA)

Save: Alexis Diaz (21)

Wednesday Starters:

Nick Lodolo

Kyle Hendricks

Game 3:

The Reds won the series Tuesday and are looking for a sweep Wednesday. A rain delay would postpone the start time to 7:20. The Cubs would score early, top 2 Nico Hoerner hit an RBI double off the left field wall, Cubs lead 1-0. The Cubs would score 1 more in the 2nd off a Christian Bethancourt RBI single. The Cubs would score 4 in the 3rd off Lodolo, extending the Cubs lead to 6-0. The Reds would get their first base runner in the 4th on an Elly De La Cruz double. In the 5th, Jake Fraley hit his 3rd home run of the season, a 3 run shot to cut the lead in half. Cubs lead 6-3.

In the 6th, Reds killer Ian Haap hit his 17th home run of the season to extend the Cubs lead to 8-3. Seiya Suzuki would later hit an RBI single to give the Cubs a 9-3 lead. In the 7th, Pete Crow-Armstrong lined a 2 run double extending their lead to 11-3. In the 8th, Cody Bellinger continues to mash in Great American Ballpark, hitting a 2 run single giving the Cubs their 13th run of the game. The Cubs would hit 9 doubles Wednesday night, the most for them since 2010. The Reds would get 1 more in the 8th on a Will Benson single, but the Reds mercifully fall short, Cubs win 13-4. Reds pitching was less than spectacular to say the least. Jakob Junis didn’t have his best team debut, allowing 3 runs in 1.1 innings. Nick Lodolo allowed a season high 8 earned runs in 5.2 innings pitched, he didn’t walk a batter and struck out 6.

BOX SCORE STANDOUTS:

Santiago Espinal: 2-4 R (11 game hit streak)

Jake Fraley: 1-3 HR(3) 3RBI

Winning Pitcher: Kyle Hendricks (3-9 6.86 ERA)

Losing Pitcher: Nick Lodolo (8-4 3.99 ERA)

The Reds get an off day Thursday and will face the Giants in Cincinnati for a weekend series Friday.
