The Cincinnati Reds have acquired outfielder Joey Wiemer and RHP Jakob Junis from the Milwaukee Brewers for RHP Frankie Montas per Mark Feinsand @Feinsand on 𝕏.
Montas has struggled as of late but has shown he can have a dominant start every one in a while. The Reds get Weimer, who played college ball at the University of Cincinnati, will be under team control until 2029. Wiemer was the number 90 ranked prospect on the MLB pipeline top 100 in 2023. Wiemer has struggled in 393 career at bats but has decent power potential and most likely will be in AAA Louisville when he gets to the team.
Jakob Junis this season has a 4-0 record with an ERA of 2.14 out of the bullpen. Jakob is one of these players who has outshined his potential as he was originally drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 29th round of the 2011 MLB Draft. He has turned that into an 8 year career with a 42-45 record striking out a career 681 with 195 walks. Junis has spot start ability and can be used in bunches out of the bullpen and will probably set up a possible Nick Martinez trade before the deadline. On paper, the Reds got a pretty good return for Montas. As far as how Junis fits into the Reds future plans, he has an $8MM mutual option, with a $3MM buyout, which is much lower than Martinez’s $14MM option.
