The Reds travel to Atlanta to take on another injury riddled team in the Braves. Cincinnati is coming off a series that resulted in being swept by the Washington Nationals. Atlanta has overcome some adversity this year with injuries to key players, especially Ronald Acuña Jr. Atlanta is .500 since losing Acuña. This series would be shortened due to rain with the finale being pushed to September 9th.

Game 1:

Hunter Greene is on the mound on Monday night versus Reynaldo Lopez. Greene and Lopez have been excellent this season respectively and both were named to the All-Star team and Lopez is undefeated at home this season. The Reds would jump out early in the 1st. Elly De La Cruz does what only Elly De La Cruz can do, crushes a baseball to right field and reaches 3rd for a triple without a throw.

He would score on the next pitch on a sacrifice fly to medium deep right field. Good defense by Greene and Benson keep the Braves scoreless through the first 2 frames. Will Benson would add on to the Reds 1-0 lead with a solo home run, giving Cincinnati and 2-0 lead.

This is a homecoming series for Benson. Later in the inning, with De La Cruz on 1st, Jeimer Candelario hit a hard ground ball past the first baseman for a double with De La Cruz somehow scoring from 1st on the play. Reds lead 3-0. The Reds would score one more the 5th on a Jonathan India sac fly to give the Reds a 4-0 lead. The Braves would get 1 run in the 9th off Alexis Diaz, a sac fly, as the Reds would go on to win the opener of the series 4-1.

Hunter Greene continues to dominate, he would go 7 innings, allow just 2 hits, walk 3 and strike out 7. Greene has been untouchable in July. He’s allowed just 7 hits, he’s struck out 24 batters and has an ERA of just 0.45. 2024 is becoming a break out year for Hunter Greene. He is 7-4 with a 3.14 ERA and has a WHIP at 1.09.

BOX SCORE STANDOUTS:

Elly De La Cruz: 2-4 3B, BB, 2R

Will Benson: 2-2 HR(11) BB

Jeimer Candelario: 2-4 2 RBI

Winning Pitcher: Hunter Greene (7-4 3.14 ERA)

Losing Pitcher: Reynaldo Lopez (7-4 2.12 ERA)

Game 2 Starters:

Frankie Montas

Allan Winans

Game 2:

Tuesdays game would be rained out and a double header would be scheduled for Wednesday. Frankie Montas gets the start for the Redlegs, coming off a couple not so great starts. Elly De La Cruz would record his major league best 50th and 51st stolen bases in this game with number 50 coming in the first inning. Elly is the first Red to eclipse 50 stolen bases since Billy Hamilton (59) in 2017.

The Reds would get 2 runs in the 1st on a Spencer Steer “little league” home run, giving the Reds a first inning 2-0 lead. Later in the inning Jake Fraley would hit a big league home run, a 2 run dinger to grow the Reds lead to 4-0 in the 1st inning.

Atlanta would score 3 runs off Montas in the 1st and 2nd innings, cutting in to the Reds lead, it’s 4-3. In the 3rd inning, Elly De La Cruz would pull a change up on the outer half of the plate to deep right for a solo home run, the Reds lead 5-3 now.

Later in the inning, Noelvi Marte looks to get going as he ripped a 2 run double to left, extending the Reds lead to 7-3. After the Braves score 1 in the bottom half of the 3rd, Spencer Steer crushed a 2 run double to the left field wall that would score De La Cruz and Candelario and give the Reds a 9-4 lead. Both teams bullpens would hold each other in check as the Reds would go on to win this one 9-4.

Frankie Montas had another not so great outing on Wednesday, he would go 4.1 innings, allow 10 hits, strike out 6 and allow 4 earned runs. Sam Moll would come in and strike out the only 2 hitters he saw in relief of Montas. The Reds bullpen did not allow a hit or a walk on Wednesday afternoon.

BOX SCORE STANDOUTS:

Elly De La Cruz: 3-5 HR(18) 3R

Spencer Steer: 3-5 3RBI

Noelvi Marte: 1-5 2RBI

Jake Fraley: 3-5 HR(2) 2RBI

Winning Pitcher: Sam Moll (2-1 2.63 ERA)

Losing Pitcher: Allan Winans (0-2 15.26 ERA)

The Reds get an off day on Thursday and travel to St. Petersburg to take on the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. The Rays are having a “down year” and are currently 51-51, 4th in the AL East. Nick Lodolo will get the start in game 1 and the Rays have yet to announce their starter. Lodolo has a 6.14 ERA in his last 3 starts but has a season ERA of just 3.51.
