In front of a sellout crowd in Tokyo, Japan, bantamweight Junto Nakatani scored an impressive first round KO win over Vincent Astrolabio to keep his belt and has now put his name among the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport. A perfectly placed straight left to the body put Astrolabio down and out for the count.
Flashy knockout wins isn’t new for Nakatani as he scored the KO of the year last year over Andrew Maloney. However, given how strong and tough Astolabio was, no one could have seen this one coming in the way it did. After solid back and forth action early on, a perfectly placed 1-2 by Nakatani to the body put Astrolabio down in what had appeared to be a delayed reaction after the punch landed. The quick knockout came to a surprise to everyone, including Nakatani, who apologized to the world for such a quick ending.
After the fight, Nakataki hopes he can unify the belts in the bantamweight division and eventually land an all-Japanese showdown with the top pound-for-pound star Naoya Inoue in a fight that would sell out the Tokyo Dome instantly.
The win now puts Nakatani in the pound-for pound rankings for the 2nd time in as many months, we saw the rise of two stars in the lower weight divisions. Last month, it was Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez. Today, it was Junko Nakatani.
They’re just getting started.
