I can’t lie, I’ve been waiting for a topic like this to come up so I can share my thoughts on it. A report came out recently from an “NFL exec” calling Josh Allen overrated, so its time for me to come to his defense, look into some numbers, and show that if anything Josh Allen is being underrated – at least compared to the narratives that surround him.

Just to get it out of the way, yes Allen throws too many INT’s and its problem he needs to fix, especially this year with a thinner WR corps. This season I expect him to clean it up because they will be taking less shots down field, and will be a more run heavy team, so the picks will decrease. While he might throw a lot of picks, he scores A LOT of TD’s to make up for it.

BY THE NUMBERS

Josh Allen just set an NFL record for having his 4th consecutive season with 40+ touchdowns, if it had been any other QB that’s all the media would be talking about, but were still just talking about turnovers. Any other QB probably wins an MVP for doing that, but not Josh.

Allen also set an NFL record for 11 games with a rushing and passing TD in a season, and tied an NFL record (both him and Jalen Hurts did it last season) with 15 rushing TD’s. Not only does he get it done through the air, he also gets it done on the ground, and I think he’s proven that he is one of the best dual threats, and one of the best athletes to ever play the QB position

Furthermore, since the year 2020 no player has more TD’s than Allen’s 203. Mahomes is the next closest with 179. That is a difference of 24 touchdowns is the same as Lamar Jackson and Matt Stafford, and a couple more than CJ Stroud and Trevor Lawrence threw for last season. He’s a good QB’s good season ahead of Mahomes in touchdowns scored, and he does not get the love he deserves for it.

PLAYOFF NUMBERS

For some reason there is a narrative that Allen “can’t get it done in the big games” which has always been baffling to me. His playoff losses to Mahomes (the only QB who is better than him) are in no way his fault. He scored a touchdown with 13 seconds left in the game to send his team to the Super Bowl, and 99% of the time that’s exactly what happens, but Allen scored that TD and never got the ball back as Mahomes put up 10 points in those 13 seconds and overtime. Last season, a missed field goal was the deciding factor for the Bills losing to Mahomes again. SO to say Allen doesn’t perform in the playoffs is crazy. Here’s some more numbers to prove it:

Through a QB’s first 10 playoff games Allen is 2nd in yards with 3,302, 2nd in TD’s with 27, 1st in rushing yards with 563, 1st in YPC at 6.8, 3rd lowest all-time in turnover with 6, and 2nd lowest all-time interception percentage with 1.1%. His 27 postseason TD’s are 6 more than Lamar, Burrow, Tua, and Herbert combined. The bottom line is he gets it done in the playoffs, and the narrative of him being a playoff choker needs to stop.

When you factor in the fact that Allen has won the division 4 times in a row, and all the numbers and records he has, even having the conversation of “is Josh Allen Overrated” means you are underrating him. He’s put up better numbers than Mahomes and has a winning record against him, but the Bills have lost when it matters the most, so Mahomes is the clear QB1. Allen is not far behind, but he is clearly cemented as the QB2 in the league, and to say otherwise at this point is just ludicrous.
