Weight cutting is unhealthy and dangerous. It’s a common tactic used for fighters, outside of the heavyweight division, to make their contracted weight. There have been many instances of this, but the most recent one occurred over the weekend when middleweight belt-holder Janibek Alimkhanuly, as he was forced to pull out of his scheduled fight with Andrei Mikhailovich due to severe dehydration as he reportedly fainted during his weight cut to try and make the 160-lb limit.

Janibek is widely considered the man to beat in his weight class, having never missed weight for any of his fights in the weight division. Even though the middleweight division is bare at best, he still continues to fight on, giving an honest effort every time he steps in the ring. The unfortunate part of this postponement is that he still hasn’t fought in the 2024 calendar year, and for someone who is considered among the top of his division, that may be considered a step back.

Hopefully, he can be healthy soon and get back into the ring.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
