Rece Hinds made his Major League debut on July 8th, 2024 and he debuted with a bang! Before we talk about Rece Hinds, the slugging outfielder for the Cincinnati Reds that mashes baseballs, let’s talk about who Rece Hinds is.

Rece Xola Hinds was born in Niceville, Florida on September 5th, 2000. His parents separated when Rece was a toddler, but both parents still get along well and actively cooperate as a big family. Hinds credits his stepdad for his love of baseball, stating his stepdad was teaching his stepbrother how to play and he found the game interesting at 3 years old, barely big enough to hold a bat.

Rece Hinds would play his high school baseball at Niceville High School in Florida for 3 years and his senior year at IMG Academy. Hinds was ranked the 3rd best short stop in the nation and 11th overall high school prospect coming out of high school. Hinds would have a growth spurt from his junior year to his senior year from 6’1 to a grown man at 6’4. Scouts raved over his power with consistent infield exit velocities at the Perfect Game Showcase at 98mph. Hinds would finish his high school baseball career with a batting average of .367, 24 home runs and .481 OBP in his 3 years at Niceville. Hinds was selected to the 2019 USA Today Super 25 national championship team as a 3rd baseman and would finish runner up to future Royals star Bobby Witt Jr. in the 2018 High School Home Run Derby. Hinds would go on to commit to Louisiana State University but would decide on his baseball future after the draft.

Rece Hinds was selected with the 49th pick in the 2nd round by the Cincinnati Reds in 2019. Hinds would elect to go pro and play in the Reds organization, opting out of playing college ball at LSU. Hinds would sign for $1.7 million and get to work.

Hinds would play rookie ball in 2019 and play in 3 games, but would miss out on a 2020 season due to a shut down of the season due to the COVID-19 outbreak. In 2021, Hinds would split time between Rookie ball and Low A Daytona and showcase his power. In 54 games, Hinds would bat .259, hit 13 doubles, and hit 12 home runs. He would strike out 65 times in 201 at bats with 17 walks. In 2022, Hinds would split time between Rookie ball, High A Dayton and AA Chattanooga. Hinds would struggle in ‘22 but the power flashes were there. He would bat .233, slug .428 and hit 12 home runs in 79 games between the 3 leagues. Injuries in 2021 and 2022 would derail a lot of his playing time. He had a meniscus injury in 2021 and a hamate bone fracture in 2022 that caused him to miss significant time. The Reds would decide to move Hinds to the outfield after the 2022 season.

2023 would be a year where he finally starts to put it all together. Hinds would play in 109 games in AA Chattanooga. Hinds would hit 23 home runs with 98 RBI. He would steal 20 bases while only being caught 6 times. Hinds’ play in 2023 showed that he has the tools to be a Major League ballplayer. The Reds saw that too and added Hinds to the 40 man roster in the 2023 offseason going into 2024 and a promotion to AAA Louisville.

Rece Hinds hit 6 home runs in 5 games

Rece Hinds would start the 2024 season in AAA Louisville. Hinds would hit a home run 494 feet. Hinds would struggle in Louisville early in the season. Hinds would bat .181 in April without hitting a home run. May would see improvement, batting .271 with 6 home runs, doubling his walk total from 7 to 15 while getting his strikeouts down. Hinds would struggle again in June. Batting .180 with 4 home runs, walking only 3 times and striking out 38 times. He would only have 4 home runs and only 7 RBI in the month of June. In July in Louisville, would play in 4 games. 1 home run, 3 RBI and bat .278 before the Reds opted to promote Hinds to the Major League club following Stuart Fairchild going on the IL for a disk/spine injury.

Rece Hinds made Major League Baseball history from the start in Cincinnati. Rece Hinds is the only player ever(since at least 1901) to gave 5 extra base hits in their first 2 games played. In just 23 career at bats, Hinds has 11 hits, 5 home runs, 3 doubles, a triple and 2 stolen bases. Hinds is batting .478, slugging 1.348 and has an OPS of 1.868.

Can Rece Hinds keep this incredible run going? No chance. Can Rece Hinds become a perineal All-Star and become one of the best players in Reds team history? Only time will tell. Hinds has the tools and the drive to put together a terrific Major League career. For right now, in this moment, this 1 week into the career of Rece Hinds is one of the greatest debuts in Major League Baseball history.

[…] Hinds has always been known for his massive power at the plate. He needed experience and teaching to keep the power, but cut down on the K’s. Problem was, he was drafted in 2019, COVID ruined the 2020 season and a torn meniscus and a broken hamate bone in his hand further hampered that experience and training. Fast forward to 2023. From the start of the season until June 1st, he struck out 40% of the time. But from June 1st on, he used that experience and training to cut his strikeout rate from 40% to 27.7% and had a slash line of .304/.377/.617 with 18 home runs as well. He gained confidence, and he gained a 40 man roster spot. Two weeks ago he burst on the major league scene and set MLB records on his way to Player of the Week honors. He certainly will not be player of every week, but the tools are there to make plays and help this team win games every week.
