The Colorado Rockies come in to Great American Ballpark losers of 6 in a row to the Cincinnati Reds for a 4 game series. The Rockies currently host the worst statistical pitching staff in Major League Baseball and the Reds offense look to use this as an opportunity to get hot.
The Reds promote the teams’ number 15 ranked prospect Rece Hinds on Monday with Stuart Fairchild going on the IL for a back injury. Hinds is a power threat with above average speed and is an upgrade defensively over Martini in right field. The Reds also acquired outfielder Austin Slater from San Francisco in a trade for relief pitcher Alex Young. Slater will be mostly used in a platoon role against left handed pitching.
Game 1:
Mondays’ game sees lefty Andrew Abbott on the mound for Cincinnati against Ryan Feltner for Colorado. Andrew Abbott would whip up a gem on Monday night. Abbott would go 7 innings, strikeout 8, walk 2 and not allow a run. Elly De La Cruz would steal his 44th and 45th base in the 1st inning. Elly would be thrown out at home on a double steal attempt.
The Reds would get their first run of the game on a double play off the bat of Tyler Stephenson. De La Cruz would score on the play. Jeimer Candelario would score on a ball lazily tossed back to the pitcher Feltner. Reds lead 2-0. Rece Hinds would make a nice sliding catch in the 5th, his first action of the game defensively.
Hinds would ground out on a bullet to the shortstop in his first at bat. Hinds would get his first major league hit in the 5th, a hustle double on a ball just off the short stops glove. In the 8th inning, the Reds would play add in. Rece Hinds would crush his first career home run, giving the Reds a 3-0 lead. Hinds home run was measured at 449 feet, the 2nd longest for a player on their first career home run in their Major League debut.
Later in the 8th, Elly De La Cruz would rip a double in the right field, scoring Will Benson from 1st, giving the Reds a 4-0 lead. The Reds would score 2 more in the 8th. Elly De La Cruz would score from 3rd on a chopper back to the pitcher, and Santiago Espinal would hit a single up the middle that score Jeimer Candelario, giving us our final score. Reds win 6-0.
The Reds win their 7th game in a row versus Colorado and do it in a shutout. Rece Hinds had a very impressive Major League debut, a double and a home run along with a nice defensive play.
BOX SCORE STANDOUTS:
Rece Hinds: 2-3 HR(1)
Elly De La Cruz: 2-3 2R, 2SB(44,45) BB, RBI
Jeimer Candelario: 2-4 2R, RBI
Winning Pitcher: Andrew Abbott (9-6 3.06 ERA)
Losing Pitcher: Ryan Feltner (1-8 5.29 ERA)
Tuesday Starters:
Cal Quantrill
Nick Lodolo
Game 2:
Nick Lodolo was activated from the IL on Tuesday and would get the start against Cal Quantrill. The Reds would strike first in the 2nd inning. Tyler Stephenson would launch his 7th home run of the season to give the Reds a 1-0 lead.
Santiago Espinal would hit an RBI single and then Will Benson would crush a 3 run home run to right field to give the Reds a 5 run lead in the 2nd inning. The game would go into a rain delay after 2 outs in the 3rd inning. The game would be delayed for 45 minutes. Lodolo would return to pitch after the delay. Lodolo would surrender a solo home run, a double, then a 2 run homer and a single. He would leave the game after 3.2 innings. The Rockies would close the gap in the 4th inning to make it a 5-4 game.
Tyler Stephenson would hit a RBI double and Rece Hinds would score him on a triple to extend the Reds lead to 7-4. Later, in the 7th inning, Rece Hinds would hit his 2nd home run in as many games and extend the Reds’ lead to 8-4. Rece Hinds would become the first player in major league history (at least 1901) to hit 5 extra base hits in their first 2 career games. This home run would be projected at 458 feet and be clocked at 112.7 mph off the bat.
Santiago Espinal would score on a Will Benson double and Spencer Steer would line a 2 run home run to right to give the Reds a 11-4 lead. The Rockies would get 2 in the 8th and the Reds would get 1 more in the bottom half on a Noelvi Marte sacrifice fly. Reds win 12-6.
Nick Lodolo had his brilliant return ruined by the rain delay, that surely messed up his rhythm. The Reds’ bullpen would only allow 1 earned run the rest of the game following Lodolo’s departure.
BOX SCORE STANDOUTS:
Rece Hinds: 3-4 3B, 2B, HR(2) 2 RBI
Tyler Stephenson: 3-5 HR(7), 2 RBI
Will Benson: 2-4 HR(10) 3 RBI
Santiago Espinal: 2-4 2R, RBI
Winning Pitcher: Nick Martinez (3-5 4.10 ERA)
Losing Pitcher: Cal Quantrill (6-7 4.13 ERA)
Wednesday Starters:
Frankie Montas
Kyle Freeland
Game 3:
Cincinnati looks to win the series on Wednesday with Frankie Montas on the mound against Kyle Freeland. Montas would toss 2 scoreless innings, but would get tagged for 3 in the 3rd, 2 on a Sam Hilliard home run. Jonathan India would put the Reds on the board in the bottom of the 3rd with a line drive home run to centerfield.
In the 4th, Austin Slater would get his first hit as a Red. In the 5th, Sam Hilliard would float his 2nd home run of the game just over the left field wall, extending the Rockies lead to 4-1. The Rockies would add another in the 6th on a Jake Cave double, 5-1 now. In the bottom of the 7th, Tyler Stephenson would bit a double to right field, but would be thrown out trying to leg a double on a questionable decision by the Reds 3rd base coach JR House. Rece Hinds would later hit an RBI single, scoring Noelvi Marte, cutting the lead to 5-2. Hinds would later get his first career stolen base without a throw.
The Rockies would add 1 in the 8th off Brent Suter and the Reds would look to rally back to win the game in the 9th. Tyler Stephenson would hit a solo home run to cut the lead to 3. Santiago Espinal would hit a RBI single up the middle to cut it to 2, Jonathan India would hit a sacrifice fly to cut it to 1, but Elly De La Cruz would ground out to the short stop to end the game. The Reds made it close in the end, but the Rockies win 6-5. The Rockies avoid having a change of being swept on Thursday and avoid losing 9 in a row to the Redlegs.
Kyle Freeland for the Rockies was excellent, he would go 6.2 innings pitched, strike out 9 and walk 1 with 2 earned runs. Freeland had his breaking and off speed pitches working, he would only run into trouble when hitters would lay off and wait on a fastball, but Reds hitters couldn’t capitalize on it. Frankie Montas would go 7 innings, allow 8 hits, 5 earned runs, but would strike out 7 and only walk 2.
BOX SCORE STANDOUTS:
Noelvi Marte: 3-4 2R
Tyler Stephenson: 2-4 HR(7)
Jonathan India 1-4 HR(8) 2RBI
Rece Hinds: 1-4 RBI, SB(1)
Winning Pitcher: Kyle Freeland (1-3 6.00 ERA)
Losing Pitcher: Frankie Montas (4-7 4.38 ERA)
Thursday Starters:
Hunter Greene
Austin Gomber
Game 4:
Freshly named All-Star Hunter Greene gets the start in the series finale on Thursday against Austin Gomber. Elly De La Cruz is getting a rare off day Thursday, his 2 game missed this season.
Hunter Greene was flawless to start the game by striking out the first 6 batters of the game. Tyler Stephenson would remain red hot, launching a 3 run home run in the 3rd inning to give the Reds a 3-0 lead. Stephenson has homered in 3 consecutive games.
In the 4th, Santiago Espinal would hit his 5th home run of the season, extending the Reds’ lead to 4-0. The Rockies would get 1 back in the 5th on a Michael Toglia solo home run. Jeimer Candelario would give the Reds some insurance runs in the 7th, ripping a 2 run double to right field and extending the Reds lead to 6-1. Later, Tyler Stephenson would hit his 2nd home run of the game, a 2 run shot, and that gives the Reds an 8-1 lead. That’s where this game would end.
Reds win the ballgame 8-1 and win the 4 game series after being swept by the Tigers last time out. Hunter Greene continues to show us that he deserves his All-Star spot and a chance to start for the NL. Greene would go 6 innings, strike out 10, walk 2 and only allow 2 hits.
BOX SCORE STANDOUTS:
Tyler Stephenson: 2-5 2HR(9,10) 5 RBI
Rece Hinds: 2-4
Jonathan India: 3-4 BB, 2R
Santiago Espinal: 2-4 HR(5)
Winning Pitcher: Hunter Greene (6-4 3.34 ERA)
Losing Pitcher: Austin Gomber (2-6 4.61 ERA)
The Reds finish the home stand against the Miami Marlins on Friday night and look to get to the All-Star break on a positive note. Friday we’ll see Carson Spiers pitch against Yonny Chirinos.
