You don’t have to live in Queen’s to hear about the Mets. Especially in the last 24 hours or so. The team with the richest owner, may also be the team with the richest fans. Now that the Mets have gone on a sustained winning stretch and have played themselves back into the play-off hunt, it will be intreging exactly what the Mets, and their front office will do. But it will be more exciting to see how the fans react to what they do or do not do. Everything starts with pitching, so we will too.

The pitching staff remains in flux. Following the first game of the series, the Mets activated newly acquired Phil Maton (acquired from Tampa Bay for future cash or player to be named). They also optioned Eric Orze to Syracuse and placed Reed Garrett on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation. Danny Young was recalled from Syracuse to take Garrett’s place. The bullpen has been a sore spot, especially over the last few weeks, and Mendoza has (not surprisingly) started pushing his starters a bit more after relying on the relievers a lot in the early going this season.

Regarding the starters, Kodai Senga continues his path back from injury. The thrower of the “Ghost Fork,” who was supposed to be the ace of the Mets staff this season, has not appeared in any games. Originally due to return on May 27th, Senga has made two rehab starts so far. While he has not gone more than three innings in either of the starts, he also has not surrendered a run. Reinforcements are on the way.

While rehabbing starters and acquiring relievers is important, can the Mets work on getting the proper cleats? For professional athletes, the most minute things can make a major difference. Such is the case with J.D. Martinez and CleatGate. As a reminder, about a week ago, Martinez missed a game with an ankle injury caused by cleats ordered off Amazon with his normal Adidas cleats being delayed. He was overnighted a few pairs, which should get him to the break. His newest bulk shipment has arrived, but they were low-tops, not his preferred high-tops. Cue the comments on the trials and tribulations of being a major leaguer, how this is typical Mets, etc.

And, in the most “out there” concept of the week, reports are now surfacing that the Astros and Mets have discussed a trade for Pete Alonso. While trades are discussed all the time, a deal involving the Mets first baseman and Home Run Derby champ is one that could be a sensitive topic for Mets fans. Alonso is a home grown talent, drafted by the Mets out of the University of Florida. He has also brought popularity to the franchise and a swagger that has not been seen on the team in a long while. However, it bears noting that leaders of the Mets have been doing a lot of team building recently, including buying dinner for the team. Those leaders were identified as Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Lindor. Alonso was not mentioned.

Owner Steve Cohen, the richest owner in sports, has not been shy about spending. If Alonso does indeed get traded, it will be more of a philosophical shift in team building with David Stearns building through prospects, vs. the buying of free agents that has not worked over the past few seasons. This topic obviously bears a lot of watching leading into the trade deadline. As I discussed on The Sports Truth podcast previously, my thought is if they traded Alonso he would go to the Texas Rangers. The potential deal parties being discussed would place him in that same division and state, but with the Astros.

Quote of the week

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
