A lot has been said about the Buffalo Bills this off-season, and how they are going to struggle offensively resulting in them not being competitive or that “their window has closed I decided to look a little deeper into the construction of this roster and will point out a couple of ways in which they have actually improved, and why, as a Bills fan, I think they will still win the division and ultimately host a playoff game again.
The Wide Receiver Room
Yes the wide receiver room. Obviously the loss of Diggs and Davis hurt the team, but the team has a whole new identity now, and those players leaving will not have as big of an impact as you might think.

Down the stretch of 2023 and into the playoffs, Diggs and Davis’ usage and stats took a dramatic drop, and players like Kincaid, Shakir, Cook, and Knox all had more targets and filled in for that production. The bottom half of the WR’s is definitely an upgrade as well with players like Keon Coleman, MVS, and Mack Hollins all being upgrades to Harty, Sheffield and Isabella. So while the receiving group does not have the top end talent it used to, the room as a whole has improved and is one that can hurt you in many ways, it will also force the defense to cover everyone instead of focusing on 1 or 2 guys.
Coaching
We made the change on Offensive Coordinator halfway through the season last year, so just by having an OC who has a full offseason to implement his players, and his scheme, and his identity it will be an improvement. Joe Brady showed last yer that he call a great game (see win over Dallas) and was a change the team desperately needed to make.

We also promoted, from within, Bobby Babich to be the teams Defensive Coordinator. This was a great move mainly because of his familiarity with the team, players, and scheme from McDermott in previous years. It will also afford McDermott the chance to just be the HC and not have to worry about calling plays on Sunday and he can focus on the game as a whole. McDermott’s seat was very hot last year and now he has a little bit of breathing room and help on both sides of the ball.
The Running Backs
While I think he was one of the more underrated players from last season (4th in rushing, and 6th in total yards) James Cook is ready to go nuclear this season and really put his name on the list of top end RB’s in the league. They have also gotten younger and more explosive in acquiring Ray Davis in the draft, swapping out some older vets in Damian Harris and Latavius Murray. Look for the Bills to be a heavy run team, that offers the speed and “shifty-ness” of Cook, with a more power back in Davis.

All these examples are areas where the Bills receive the most amount of flack, and the perception is that they took a step back, but I think they have actually improved. This does not include any FA signing (Bills with $10million post June 1) and also doesn’t take into account that they will be getting back some key defensive players from injury this season. There is a lot to like about this Bills roster, and lots of reasons why they will remain top dog in the AFC East.
