The 2024 Syracuse Mets are playing some of the best baseball that I’ve seen in Syracuse in a long time, despite the struggles that the Major League Club is facing. Through the first 56 games of the season, the Mets have produced a record of 34-22, which puts them atop the International League East Standings.
To put their record in context, the 2023 Mets club produced an abysmal record of 61-85. If the team continues at the pace they are on, this season will mark the first time since 2019 that the team finished with a record over .500. All fans of the game are aware of the struggles that are currently going on in Queens, with the New York Mets posting a 24-35 record. So what is going on in Syracuse that they are able to produce at a high level while the Major League club is struggling?
In the month of May, the Syracuse Mets played 28 games, and they posted a record of 18-10 while playing against the Rochester Red Wings, Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, Iowa Cubs, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Rail Riders, and the Buffalo Bisons. The Syracuse Mets have gotten production from a lot of different places, whether it be some veterans, or some of the teams top prospects, but let’s focus on the future of the New York Mets and take a look at how some of the Mets top prospects have performed in Syracuse during the month of May.
Luisangel Acuna
Luisangel Acuna has been able to turn it around in the month of May, finally finding his stride. The Mets number 5 overall prospect posted a slash line of .282/.336/.359 with six doubles, one home run, and seven runs batted in. Acuna has also been a nuisance on the base paths stealing 11 bases in the month. As the weather heats up in the summer months, I have faith that Acuna is also going to be heating up even more.
Blade Tidwell
After a great start to the season in Binghamton, the Mets number 10 overall prospect, Blade Tidwell, got the call to Syracuse. During the month of May, Tidwell pitched in two games at the Triple-A level, amassing 11.2 innings with a 1.54 ERA, giving up just seven hits, and two runs, while walking eight and striking out five. With Christian Scott getting the call the Queens, Tidwell is a welcomed addition to the Syracuse Mets pitching staff.
Mike Vassil
In addition to the Mets number 10 overall prospect, the Syracuse Mets are also the home to the Mets number 11 overall prospect, Mike Vassil. During the month of May, Vassil posted a 5.47 ERA over four starts, pitching in 24.2 innings while giving up 16 runs on 18 hits. Seems like these stats aren’t great, but when comparing to the 10.13 ERA that Vassil posted in the month of April, the 24 year old is turning things around. I don’t expect his ERA to be cut in half each month, but as the season progresses, Vassil will progress as well in his path the Majors.
Dom Hammel
The Mets number 14 overall prospect, Dom Hammel, also calls Syracuse home for the 2024 season. Hammel has posted a 9.00 ERA over five games, and 19 innings in the month of May. Hammel has given up 19 runs on 24 hits while striking out 16 and walking 20. The 2021 draft pick has progressed quickly through the Minor Leagues, and I think this may just be a slight bump in the road for the 25 year old right hander.
Rhylan Thomas
The Mets number 30 overall prospect has a new home, and it is located in Syracuse, NY. After a hot start to the season in Binghamton, Thomas got his first call up to the Triple A level. The 24 year old outfielder has posted a slash line of .263/.349/.342 with three doubles and four runs batted in, while walking five times and striking out four times.
The Sryacuse Mets have had or currently have a lot of their top prospects producing at high levels this season, which is accounting for the success of the team. I can’t wait to continue to see historic NBT Bank Stadium being filled up by not only the die hard fans, but also the casual fans that are around the ride the wave of success the team is having. This could be a historic year for the “Baby Mets” and I can’t wait to continue to provide insight and analysis throughout the season.
