Reds Lose Series to St. Louis

The Reds were riding high after sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers, looking to win 4 games in a row for the first time all season. The Cardinals were coming into Great American Ball Park winning 9 of their last 11 games, but were late getting to Cincinnati following a long rain delay Sunday night.

Game 1:

Memorial Day’s game saw Nick Lodolo take on Lance Lynn. The Cardinals would jump out early in the 1st on a Paul Goldschmidt solo home run, giving St Louis an early 1-0 lead. In the bottom half, Jeimer Candelario would tie the game with his own solo home shot. Candelario has had a good month of May, following an abysmal March/April. Jeimer is batting .262, slugging .476 with an OPS at .802 this month. In April he hit .190/.354/.640. Jeimer has also cut down on strikeouts with 16 as opposed to 29 the month prior. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Will Benson would single in Nick Martini, giving Cincinnati a 2-1 lead. Jacob Hurtibise would reach on an error by Paul Goldschmidt at 1st, scoring Jonathan India, giving the Reds a 3-1 lead. Nick Lodolo was strong on Monday. He would go 5.1 innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 earned run.

Fernando Cruz would come in to relieve Lodolo, pitching 1.2 innings. Cruz would strike out all 5 Cardinals hitters he faced. Sam Moll and Lucas Sims would pitch the last 2 innings respectively without allowing a hit as the Reds beat St.Louis 3-1. The Reds extend their winning streak to 4 games and look to ride the momentum.

Game 2:

Game 2 would see Andrew Abbott face off against Kyle Gibson. Abbott has been stellar this season. Abbott has allowed 2 runs or less in 9 of his 10 starts to this point. That would not be the case today for Abbott. In the 3rd, the Cardinals would take a 1-0 lead on a Masyn Winn double. In the 4th, Nolan Arenado would hit a 2 run homer run giving ST. Louis a 3-0 lead. Cardinals starter Kyle Gibson would carry a no-hitter into the 6th inning, but Will Benson would end the no-hit bid on a solo home run, cutting the score to 3-1. Top 7, Nolan Gorman would blast a 2 run home run off Abbott, extending the lead to 5-1. Buck Farmer would relive Abbott. Later in the inning, Masyn Winn would hit an RBI ground out, giving ST. Louis a 6-1 lead. Finally, in the 9th inning, Iván Herrera would hit a single off Brent Suter that would score Goldschmidt. Bringing the final tally to 7-1. Abbott was his best on Tuesday as he gets tabbed for the loss. Abbott’s final line would be 6 innings, 7 hits, 6 earned runs and only 2K’s.

The Reds look to salvage the series Wednesday

Game 3:

Wednesday’s series finale would see Frankie Montas take on Andre Pallante. Matt Carpenter would lead off the 3rd inning with a first pitch solo home run. The Reds offensive woes would come back as the team would go hitless through the first 3.2 innings following last night being no hit through 5. The 4th inning would see Nolan Gorman hitting an RBI double and Masyn Winn extending his hitting streak to 18 games with an RBI single. Cardinals now lead 3-0. The Redlegs would get their first run of the game on an RBI bloop single from Jonathan India in the 7th that would score Nick Martini, score now 3-1. Nolan Gorman would keep the hot hand and blast a solo home run in the top of the 8th, extending the Cardinals lead to 4-1. The Reds would catch a break in the bottom half of the inning. After an Elly De La Cruz single, the Candyman would hit a double to right field. After the ball bounced around, De La Cruz would score bringing the score down to 4-2. In the top of the 9th, Buck Farmer would walk in a run, Giving ST. Louis a 5-2 lead. The Reds would score one more in the 9th on a Tyler Stephenson sac fly. The Cardinals win the game and the series after the Reds win game 1.
