The Most Exciting Team in Baseball! (but not yet)

The Cincinnati Reds were the most exciting team in baseball… for a month

2023:

The youth movement for the Reds began on May 15th, 2023, at Coors Field in Denver Colorado when Matt McLain made his major league debut. From that moment on, the team had another 15 players debut, led by future superstar Elly De La Cruz. Elly started his big-league career off strong batting .307, 3 HR’s, 12 RBI’s and 9 SB’s in June. The month of June was one for the ages for Reds fans, capped off with a 12-game winning streak, the longest since 1957! Everything seemed to go the team’s way, late game rally’s, walk-offs and the infamous Ricky Karcher game. Unfortunately, the season ended without a playoff birth, but the future looks very bright in the Queen City!

2024:

The 2024 season began with major hype. With all of the young talent looking to take major steps forward this team looked poised to make a playoff chase and possibly a run at the National League Central Division. Unfortunately, the season would start horribly wrong. The team’s number 1 prospect Noelvi Marte would be suspended 80 games for testing positive for performance enhancing drugs. Starting 2nd baseman Matt McLain would undergo shoulder surgery and is expected to be out through August. TJ Friedl would break his wrist and return in May, just to get injured mere days later, this time with a broken finger. Relief pitcher Ian Gibaut is expected to miss all of 2024 with possible carpel tunnel surgery just to name a few. Despite all of the injuries coming out of Spring Training, Cincinnati would start the season 16-14 through April 30th. Once the calendar turned to May, the season would take a turn for the worse. The Redlegs lost a season low 8 straight games. As of today, the Reds sit at 19-25 with three more games in LA before coming home to the Padres and Dodgers.

All isn’t lost; however, key pieces look to be soon returning with Noelvi Marte’s suspension ending in 40 games, Matt McLain looks to be on track in his recovery and Mike Ford looks to be a decent power threat off the bench. Elly De La Cruz is budding into a young super star and demonstrating that he could one day be the face of baseball as he is currently on pace for a 40 HR/110 SB season. If the pitching can continue to perform the way they have up to this point, with the offense looking to catch a spark, I am not writing this team off just yet. This team has too much young talent to be as bad as they have been up to this point.
