Brando Mayea is the #9 prospect on the Yankees list. Brando Mayea is being called the “mini Gary Sheffield.” Some people call him Brandon and some are calling him Brando. Mayea is an 18 year old from Cuba now living in the Dominican Republic was drafted in the 2023 International Draft. Brando signed with the Yankees for $4.35 million.

Mayea is an elite athlete with plus tools, once a shortstop is now transitioning to centerfield. Mayea is aggressive at the plate, he is also gaining a better understanding of the strike zone, so his contact has been improving while cutting down on the strikeouts. He has lightning quick bat speed and power to go with it. “Mayea is one of the most electric talents” Jaime Ramos Mayea’s trainer has said,

“Brandon Mayea simply has a great feel for contact and swings with rotational verve, and the combination is enough to punish the baseball.” 

Mayea played in the Dominican Summer League in 2023, his stats aren’t mind blowing, but definitely decent for an 18 year old. Brando’s slashline from 2023 look like this. .276/.382/.400 with 3 HR 18 RBI and 22 stolen bases over a 38 game stretch.

His fielding is looking good as well, Mayea’s fielding stats over 253 innings in CF, are 68 put outs, 4 outfield assists, one double play turned and zero errors. On defense, he is a future Gold Glove winner and capable of playing center field, hence the switch to the outfield. Lots of speed to handle fly balls and make flashy diving catches

Look for Brando Mayea to fill out a bit more with a little more time in the minors, the 5’11 170 pound Cuban will be a five tool player. He’s super fast running a 6.4 in the 60 yard dash. Mayea is a gifted speedster and cruises the basepaths with ease. He can turn routine doubles into standup triples. He has a cannon of an arm, his arm strength is MLB ready now. In the clubhouse, he’s a leader who is always motivating others. His intelligence is also well above others for his age.

Nobody knows what the future holds for this supremely talent youngster, but he has all the tools of an All-Star caliber player. If Mayea hits his ceiling he could very well be a top player in the league. “The swagger of Gary Sheffield and the overall talent of a Mookie Betts” says Angelo Ramos the brother of Mayea’s trainer Jaime.

The Yankees are looking at a true 30/30 player on offense, Mayea is still years away from making an impact in the Bronx, but there is a lot of potential to be excited about. Brando wowed the scouts and his trainer, now he is ready to wow the Yankee fans.
