The Milwaukee Brewers had a successful roadtrip winning back to back series’ against the Cinncinati Reds and Baltimore Orioles. Both the Reds and Orioles are fun, competitive teams. The Reds are a tough division rival and the Orioles are very young, similar to us. It was exciting to see how our young guys would matchup and it resulted in an electric road trip for the Brewers. Yes, the third article in a row I have described the Brew Crew as “electric” as they have started the season with a bang through explosive offense!

Brewers scored a total of 24 runs off of Cincy and let up 17 runs throughout the series. Overall the series was competitive with both teams bringing big bats. This is always a fun division rival matchup to look forward to and this time did not disappoint.

Game 1 Brewers lost 8-10 giving up 4 unearned runs due to multiple fielding errors and miscommunication among the infield. Aaron Ashby was called up for the game and had 4 innings pitched before he was replaced with JB Bukaukas. Ashby didn’t have too bad of a start until his defense couldn’t back him up and he may have felt more pressure than necessary.

It didn’t help the fact that the Reds have this 6’5 monstrosity sophomore Elly De La Cruz who is a freakishly fast powerhouse. Last season, even as a rookie, Elly gave the Crew a headache stealing second, third, then home in one trip around the bases. This game Elly went 4/4, including a 450 ft moonshot and an inside the park home run after CF Frelick missed a diving catch. Just watching Elly run at the speed of light around the bases left me shaking in my boots.

Graham Ashcraft the starter for Cincy was a bulldog in dominating Brewer’s bats until top of the 5th inning; Turang finally got the Brewer’s bats going with a solo home run. This sparked a streak of hits from Dunn, Ortiz, Contreras leaving the inning 8-3. The game ended with a 8-10 loss for the Brewers with a too little, too late offensive effort closing out the game.

Brewers won game 2 score 9-5 with Joe Ross starting through 6 innings letting up 5 hits, 3 runs, got 7 strikeouts and the win. The stars of the show were Sal Frelick, Blake Perkins, Christian Yelich. Frelick batted 3/4, 2 runs, a RBI and a walk. Perkins has been hot lately going 3/5 with 2 runs, and 3 RBI, keep an eye on this guy he is a very underrated player. Yelich went 2/4 with 3 RBI.

Observing this game I noticed how disciplined the Brewers are while at the plate. They all seemed to be very selective on the pitches they were taking cuts at. There also seems to be high confidence across the lineup when stepping into the batter’s box. This may seem to be a slight difference from when Craig Counsell was manager so maybe this is a change our new manager Pat Murphy has established? Something to look for as the season progresses.

Game 3 Brewers won 7-2 starting pitcher Wade Miley in his 2024 season debut and return from injury. The veteran pitched 4 innings letting up 1 run, 1 hit, 2 walks in 52 pitches. Miley is a valuable part of this team, both on and off the field, so it was exciting to see him back on the mound with a good outing. Milwaukee got bats early with a Yelich homer and was able to step on the Reds throats with closers Hoby Milner and JB Bukauskas to end the series.

Even though Brewers are fighting through some infield defensive struggles, they continue a dominant run of series wins. I am very pleased to see how well we matched up against a fun, competitive division rival. Last season it was always an entertaining battle between the Brewers and Reds and it looks as if that tradition will continue!
