Will Auston Matthews hit the 70 goals mark, for the first time in his career, with four games left in the NHL regular season? He is playing with lots of momentum, on this goal streak, and its rubbing off on his teammates as well.

Matthews scored his 66th goal of the 2024 season last night, vs the lowly New Jersey Devils, thus passing Alex Ovechkin for the most goals by a current active player in a NHL season so far.

Matthews is also the first player to score 65 plus goals in a season, since Mario Lemieux did way back, in the 1995-1996.

Matthews is also on a goal scoring streak, of six straight games.

The Maple Leafs also notched their record setting, 24th road win of the season, which is a franchise record. With the Leafs up 4-2 and the Devils, with a extra-attacker, Matthews was not on the ice to go for his 67th goal, which was sort of shocking.

One thing for sure on this hot streak, to finish with 70 goals, Matthews load management has been perfect, as Sheldon Keefe and the coaching staff are not burning him out before the start of the playoffs. The Maple Leafs and Matthews are aware, of what the biggest goal of the season is. To get in the playoffs and make a long playoff run, to shed their status of not progressing to the Conference Finals, which this team can achieve in 2024.
