The Cleveland Guardians for the second straight season, are losing starting pitcher Shane Bieber for the season.

According to MLB.com and Guardians beat writer Mandy Bell, Bieber is going to have Tommy John surgery as soon as possible.

He was having pain on Opening Day against Oakland A’s. It persisted when he pitched next against the Seattle Mariners. The team then sent him for more tests and scans, before finding the problem with the same ligaments, that gave him problems last season.

After consulting with two other doctors, together they decided that Tommy John surgery is the best course of action.

In Bieber’s two starts this season, he was dominate. He was 2-0 with 20 strikeouts and only 1 walk allowed, in 12 innings pitched.

This was the final year on his contract for Bieber.

The Guardians already lack depth at pitching, and this will not make it any easier.

They will really need Triston McKenzie and Carlos Carrasco to really step their game up and be dominate starting pitchers.
