On Monday night, the New York Yankees extended their winning streak to five games, defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks with a final score of 5-2.
This is the first time in the team’s history that they have won their first five games of the season while playing away from home. It’s also the fifth instance overall in franchise history that the Yankees have kicked off the season with a 5-0 record.
Their winning streak began over the weekend with a sweep of the Houston Astros, giving them a 4-0 start. Luis Gil, the 25-year-old right-hander, made his season debut(After Tommy John Surgery)in Monday’s game after earning the fifth starter’s position during spring training. In his eighth appearance in the major leagues, he limited the Diamondbacks to one run on one hit and three walks over 4 2/3 innings. Gil showcased his upper-90s fastball, striking out six of the 18 batters he faced and inducing 10 swinging strikes, eight of which came from his fastball.
The Yankees’ most recent 5-0 start to a season dates back to 1992, when they kicked off the year with a flawless 6-0 record.
Despite their strong start that season, they couldn’t maintain momentum. They finished the season with a disappointing 76-88 record overall.
