The Milwaukee Brewers had an electric series sweeping the New York Mets this 2024 Opening Day weekend. A series full of 1st timers, a rocking bullpen, offensive pressure, baseball controversy, and pure dominance over the Mets. Our starting shortstop Willy Adames stated the recipe for a winning culture that we got to see glimpses of this weekend. 

“This series is making a statement, the team is here to compete the goal is to come everyday with the right energy, try to win TODAY, and have this mentality the whole year.”

The series started off with our brand new budding star rookie Jackson Churio leading us off Game 1. To start the game Churio walked then next pitch, stole second showing his speedy wheels. He continued to contribute by getting a hit to move Monasterio into scoring position who then scored on a sac fly by Contreras, and a sac ground out for an RBI. He started the rest of the series batting 9th and had a combined 5 hits and 2 RBI.

DL Hall had his first start for the Brewers and his second ever MLB start. He showed promise during his 4 innings pitched. We acquired him from the Baltimore Orioles in the Corbin Burnes trade in the 2023 off-season. Oliver Dunn 3B had his first two big league hits, one being an RBI. We acquired him in the off season from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for two prospects. 

Speaking of Philly, the Brewers signed former Phillies player Rhys Hoskins 1B who has just come back from sitting out the entire 2023 season with injury. His return to playing ball started off with a BANG and immediately became a Brewers legend. 

Game 1 Hoskins came in a little too hot sliding into 2nd base, knocking over the Mets 2B Jeff McNeil and sending them into a fiery argument. As I sat on the edge of my seat, the benches cleared as Hoskins walked to the dugout. His slide was declared legal as he stayed on the bag. While Hoskins was sitting in the dugout still jawing with McNeil a new iconic taunt & meme was born and added to Brewers fans’ tool bag. Hoskins did a cry-baby taunt with his fists making fun of McNeil for his amount of complaining. You can take a man out of Philly but you can’t take the Philly out of a man; personally I LOVED this. 

Game 2 Hoskins was booed every at bat and scored 5 runs off a 2-RBI single and a 3-run home run shushing Citi Field. His last at bat Mets pitcher Yohan Ramírez threw a 94 mph pitch behind Hoskins’ head. Ramírez was thrown out of the game as our Pat Murphy, backed up by Rickie Weeks, screamed in the ump’s ear. Ramírez was given a three game suspension by the MLB for intentionally throwing at Hoskins and Carlos Mendoza suspended one. 

It’s awesome something like this happened literally Game 1 of the season for the entire team to stand together and stick up for one of our guys. This series I believe will play a huge part in jumpstarting our team’s chemistry filled with new players, 10 on this roster from a year ago. Baseball is a team sport, good team chemistry equals success. 

Our familiar faces Christian Yelich, Willy Adames, and William Contreras all had big contributions to the series which is always great to see. Yelich is so back batting 3/4 including a home run Game 1. Adames scored 2 runs and combined 4 hits and Contreras also scored 2 runs and combined 5 hits. Along with the rest of the Brew Crew they were aggressive in stealing 8 bases.

As I said before, vibes are high in Milwaukee! I’m excited about the fire Rhys Hoskins lit under the team. The Brewers haven’t started the season with a sweep since 2018, per Bally Sports, If the season is going to be anything like this series then tune in; we’re in for a good time. The Brewers season opener is on Tuesday, April 2nd, you don’t want to miss it, hope to see you there!
