Today I want to talk about New York Yankees #1 prospect Spencer Jones. As a native of California, Spencer Jones attended  La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, CA. Spencer Jones is a power hitting lefty that stands 6’6” and weighs 235lbs. Many people have been comparing him to current Yankee star Aaron Judge who is 6’7” and weighs in at 280lbs. These boys are built like NFL linebackers and can really mash.

Who He Was

Spencer Jones was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Angels out of high school in 2019 but he fractured his elbow while pitching, yes in high school Jones was a pitcher. He missed the remainder of the 2019 season. Jones decided to not sign with the Angels.

Instead, choosing to go to the University of Vanderbilt where he would arrive on campus as a two-way player, a left-handed-pitcher and center fielder. Midway through that summer he once again injured his elbow and would require Tommy John surgery. In 2021 for Vanderbilt Jones could not pitch, he appeared in 34 games as a DH, hitting 3 HR, 10 RBI while batting .273. Jones arrived in 2022 fully healthy and ready to take the job as full time right fielder, deciding not to pitch anymore.

Jones played in 61 games and produced a slash line of .370/.460/.644 while hitting 12 HR and 60 RBI, Jones left the 2022 season to go to San Diego to participate in the MLB Draft Combine.

Spencer Jones was selected 25th overall in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Yankees. In his first year in pro ball, Jones played in 25 games for the Tampa Tarpons slashing .344/425/538 with 4 HR and 12 RBI while stealing 12 bases. Spencer now 22 years old and ready to move up a level started 2023 by playing for the AA affiliate Somerset Patriots. Jones played in 117 games in Somerset hitting 16 HR with 66 RBI and stealing an impressive 43 bases. He did strike out 155 times, so the contact needs to get better.

Who He Is

2024 Spring Training is here and Spencer Jones has not disappointed the fans, going 7 for 17 batting .412 with 1 HR and 4 RBI in 11 games. Spencer Jones’ Spring Training numbers are very impressive. Jones went 3/4 today(March 16th) with 2 HR making a case for a late season call-up, seeing that his ETA to the bigs is 2025 according to MLB.com. I believe if there are any injuries to the outfielders of even Giancarlo Stanton we may see Jones in the big leagues in 2024.

Who He Could Be

The Yankees definitely believe in Spencer Jones and have proven that by not including him in offers from the Brewers for Corbin Burnes, who now is pitching for the AL East Baltimore Orioles.

The Chicago White Sox who were looking to obtain Jones’ services in a trade for their top pitcher Dylan Cease, who has now been traded to the Padres. Even though the Yankees will be hurting for approximately 2 months with their ACE and current CY Young award winner, Gerrit Cole out with elbow inflammation. They still held onto their budding youngster and are consequentially going with Nestor Cortes to open the season who has had his ups and downs both last year and this Spring. I love the fact that the Yankees are holding onto Spencer Jones and I wish him all the best in 2024 wherever he plays.

As a Yankees fan, I go to bed dreaming every night of an outfield core of Aaron Judge, Juan Soto (if they can sign him in 2025) and Spencer Jones. These guardians of the grass would be amazing for New York fans, and very scary for the AL East and the rest of the league. Yes, I know Jasson Dominguez is still here too, a good problem to have… Lets Go Yankees !!!

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
