According to reports earlier in the offseason, Blake Snell had received offers that would significantly surpass the overall value of his current contract, should he sign with the Houston Astros this coming week.

The New York Yankees were said to have offered Snell a six-year contract worth $150 million, but that offer was apparently not enough to sway him. Now, the best offer the 2023 NL Cy Young winner can reportedly secure is a two-year, $66 million deal from Bob Nightengale’s sources.

Compounding the situation, the Astros are reportedly balking at that asking price, even for a short-term deal with the elite pitcher. This development marks a stark contrast from the lucrative long-term offers Snell had reportedly fielded earlier in the offseason from other teams.

Is Scott Boras To Blame?

Throughout the offseason, agent Scott Boras adopted an uncompromising negotiating stance with both Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, ultimately failing to secure new teams for either player. Snell enters this situation as the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner, while Montgomery was instrumental in leading the Texas Rangers to the World Series last season.

Despite their impressive credentials, Boras’ hardline approach during contract negotiations has left both pitchers without new homes as the season approaches. This outcome highlights the challenges and risks involved in holding firm on lucrative contract demands, even for players coming off standout individual and team performances.

It almost looks like teams have a vendetta against this Boras, and it’s starting to show.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
