The Dallas Cowboys post season has been eerily similar to their last game. Like the team, who was down 27-0 in the first half vs the Packers, the front office followed suite by being the last of 32 teams to bring on an outside free agent.
The Cowboys finally got on the board by picking up former all-pro Linebacker Eric Kendricks, but not soon enough for most fans. Social media and sports talk shows were buzzing with criticism for the Cowboys front office when they became the last remaining team to get involved in the free agent frenzy.
With most of the criticism directed towards Owner/GM Jerry Jones and EVP Stephen Jones, Stephen made a statement Thursday at AT&T Stadium during a promotional event for Kid Rock’s Rock N Rodeo and the PBR World Finals that will be held at the Cowboys’ home stadium in May.
Jones said “I know where the frustration is, it’s the fact that we haven’t had success in the playoffs to their satisfaction. Until we do that, then the criticism is certainly something that’s going to be there. We know that’s going to be there, but we’re going to stick with what we believe will ultimately get us a championship here for our fans. We don’t define ‘all in’ by what you spend in free agency. It’s keeping the core (together).”
He also stated “When you want to keep your players that you’ve developed and worked so hard to get … then you’re not going to be able to go out and chase those (high-dollar free agent) guys. … The way I look at things, I’ve always said it, player acquisition is 365 days a year. It’s not just the first or second or third day of free agency.”
Most Cowboys fans are frustrated after the previous “All in” comment by Jerry Jones. The Jone’s continue to avoid the first wave of free agency as they bargain shop for quality free agents.
This coming season may determine if that strategy carries over to the field.
