The Yankees were going to have competition, for two bench spots on their Opening Day Roster, with Oswald Peraza, having the inside track on one of them. The Yankees view him as the future on the infield. With the news that, Peraza will be sidelined 6-8 weeks with an ailing shoulder, likely keeping him out until May which route will the Yankees go to fill the void on the roster?

Here are a few routes they could go to fill the void:
Scan the Waiver Wire:
As teams trim their rosters as we get closer to Opening Day, look for a few Veterans to become available. And the Yankees might not have to break the bank, for a stop gap infielder until Peraza is healed and ready to go.
J.D Davis was placed on Waivers most recently by the Giants . He is a versatile player, as he can play first and third base and his bat is better, then what the Yankees currently have as backups. He can also spell Anthony RIzzo if he needs a day off .

The only down side is what he may be expecting salary wise. The Giants are on the hook for some part of his $6.9 Million. Depending on what he values now, either being a starter, or being paid, he may be too much for the Yankees to spend.
In 2023 Davis hit .248 with 16 HR and 69 RBI’s. RIght now it’s a wait and see attitude with the Yankees, as they might wait to see who becomes available with a cheaper salary in the next few weeks.
Go the Free Agency Route:
The Yankees might go the Free Agency Route. The following list of players are available, with the likes of Donovan Solano, Yulie Gurriel, Jonathon Schoop, Evan Longoria, and Jean Segura. These are season veterans who would be a great addition to the Yankees lineup.
The Yankees most likely will try to sign a true shortstop to backup Anthony Volpe.
They could also go with the current backups they have on the roster:
They could bring in Veterans Josh Van Meter or Kevin Smith. The drawback is that Josh Van Meter has only played 31 starts at shortstop and Smith has never played shortstop.

‘The Yankees still have a few weeks to figure out their backup infielder position, but it wont be easy to find the right fit to plug the hole, until Peraza returns. Which option do you think is best? Do you have another option that I did not think about?
