When Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys traded a 4th round pick to the SanFrancisco 49ers a lot of fans were puzzled. Fans soon realized this was not going to change the fact that the team was fully committed to Dak Prescott. Heading into the 2024-25 offseason Jerry Jones is now pushing for a QB2 competition
Speaking on the development of Trey Lance, Jerry recently told the press (as reported by dallascowboys.com) “The arrow is really up,” Jones said. “He’s exceeded expectations as a person and as a worker. He’s got unique skills. He’s very much what we had planned on, hoped, and when we gave the pick we knew we’d be paying the [2024 contract] bonus now.”
It appears the heat may be on Cooper Rush to compete for the QB2 job despite his 5-1 record as the Cowboys starter. Cowboys fans may be excited to see the QB competition in the preseason, but don’t rule out these comments as a way to dangle both back-up QBs as trade bait. The Cowboys are trying to reload coming off another 12-5 season that ended with a playoff loss and do not currently have a 4th round pick in this years’ NFL draft.
