NFL: Mike Evans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Reach 2 yr , $52 Million Dollar Deal

Star wide receiver Mike Evans will not be exploring free agency after reaching an agreement with the Buccaneers. Sources disclosed to NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo on Good Morning Football that Evans and the Buccaneers have agreed to a two-year, $52 million contract to ensure his stay in Tampa Bay.

The deal, which averages $26 million per year, solidifies Evans’ position as one of the top receivers in the league. This move is crucial for Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht as he aims to retain key players from the NFC South championship-winning roster for the 2024 season, preventing Evans from entertaining offers from other teams.

Despite his advancing age, Evans continues to excel on the field, maintaining his ability to get open and make plays at various levels. This new contract represents a significant increase from his previous deal signed in 2018, indicating the Buccaneers’ confidence in his ongoing impact.

With this agreement, Evans has the opportunity to spend his entire career with the Buccaneers. He has already established himself as the most prolific receiver in franchise history, boasting numerous records including ten 1,000-plus-yard receiving seasons and a substantial lead in both total receiving yards and touchdown catches.

Even at the age of 30 last season, Evans maintained his performance, amassing 1,255 yards and 13 touchdowns, tying for the league lead. With a more aggressive approach from former offensive coordinator Dave Canales, his stats could have been even more impressive. In a playoff loss against Detroit in the Divisional Round, Evans showcased his prowess with a remarkable 147-yard performance, catching eight passes, including a touchdown.

Although the Buccaneers expressed their desire to retain Evans this offseason, there were concerns that his value might exceed what Tampa Bay could afford, given the team’s other impending free agents, such as safety Antoine Winfield Jr. and quarterback Baker Mayfield, who could potentially receive the franchise tag.

By securing Evans before the start of the offseason negotiations, Licht gains flexibility in retaining key players from last year’s successful roster. Keeping the star wide receiver onboard could also influence Mayfield’s decision to stay with the Buccaneers in 2024, especially since he expressed his desire to reunite with Evans after the season. With Evans committed, the focus now shifts to the quarterback’s decision.
