Day 2 of the NFL Scouting Combine featured defensive backs and tight ends. There was a small damper on things, because #1 ranked TE Brock Bowers from Georgia and one of the top corners in the draft Kool-Aid McKinstry did not participate.

The Kool-Aid situation was very intriguing. He didn’t participate because during the medical evaluation process, they found a Jones Fracture in his right foot, that he didn’t even know about.

So here we go. The winners and losers of Day 2.

Winner – Max Melton – CB – Rutgers.

Max Melton showed up to the Combine looking to show that he belonged in that Top 5 CB conversation.

Mission Accomplished.

After a strong showing at the Senior Bowl, Melton ran a blazing 4.39 in the 40, with a 1.51 10-yard split, a 40.5 inch vertical and a 11-4 broad jump.

He looked very smooth, fluid, with quick feet and turned his hips with ease during the on-the-field drills.

He very well could have moved himself into the 2nd Round.

Losers – Kalen King – CB – Penn State.

The Penn State CB came in getting 1st Round buzz. He played fairly well this past season as the teams #1 CB, after the departure of Joey Porter Jr.

That talk will certainly tamper down after Friday.

King ran a disappointing 4.61 in the 40, with a 1.54 10-yard split, a 37-inch vertical jump and a 10-2 broad.

He didn’t look good during the on-the-field drills either. He was stiff, he was out of control during his backpedals, there was no second gear or burst on the breaking drills, it just wasn’t a good day for him.

Could teams move him to the safety position after this performance?

He can improve on all these numbers when Penn State hosts it’s own Pro Day.

Winner – Quinyon Mitchell – CB – Toledo.

The Toldeo Rocket started his day off by strapping some rockets onto his cleats. He ran an incredible 4.33 in the 40, with a 1.51 10-yard split, a 38 inch vertical jump, and a 10-2 broad jump.

Mitchell showed excellent burst, smooth transitions with his hips, quick feet and his second gear was giving the quarterbacks throwing during the drills problems. He’s so fast, they kept underthrowing him. The plus side was that those underthrown balls, allowed him to show that he had good hands and the ability to adjust to the ball in mid-air.

He’s solidified himself as a Top 15 player overall in this draft and a guaranteed 1st round pick.

Loser – The Entire Safety Class.

There is simply not a single safety worth anything higher than a 3rd Rounder.

This class lacks not just an elite player, but overall depth, long speed and athleticism.

The on-the-field drills were sloppy and the coaches had to continuously explain everything to players, multiple times, per drill.

The only real highlight was seeing Auburn safety Jaylin Simpson land a sweet roundoff to backflip perfectly after the final drill of their night.

Day 3 of the NFL Combine starts at 1PM (EST) on NFL Network, with the quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers taking the field at Lucas Oil Stadium.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
