Ottawa, Ontario—Tim Stutzle netted the decisive goal in the shootout, leading the Ottawa Senators(25-27-3) to a 4-3 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights(32-19-7) on Saturday night, despite trailing by two goals and conceding a late equalizer.

Josh Norris and Thomas Chabot found the back of the net for Ottawa, with Anton Forsberg making 26 saves in his third start out of four games.

He’s played well,” interim coach Jacques Martin said of his goaltender. “I think early in the game, he wasn’t as sharp, but as the game went on, he played with a lot of confidence and poise and made some big saves for us. And in the shootout he was perfect.”

Chandler Stephenson notched two goals, and Jonathan Marchessault tallied the other for the Knights, who suffered their third consecutive loss. Logan Thompson made 30 saves.

Vegas surged to a 2-0 advantage merely three minutes into the second period with Stephenson’s power-play goal from the left faceoff circle. However, Chabot narrowed the deficit to one with a wrist shot from the high slot.

Late in the period, Forsberg came to the Senators’ rescue with a crucial save on Sheldon Rempal’s breakaway following a costly turnover.

During an Ottawa power play, Brady Tkachuk set up Batherson in the slot to level the game with less than two minutes left in the second period.

At a 2-2 deadlock, Norris put the Senators ahead at 5:48 of the third period by redirecting Chabot’s point shot into the net.

Trailing 3-2 with less than two minutes left, Vegas pushed the game to overtime when Stephenson scored his second goal of the night at 18:45 with Thompson on the bench. There was a sense of relief at finally being rewarded after pulling the goalie.

“That’s been a problem for us all year,” said Knights coach Bruce Cassidy. “So, we changed up a bit of our structure on it and found the open guy and got it to the net.

“Part of our problem with that is we haven’t been executing that play to get it to the net down low, so that was good. Obviously, helps us get a point but at the end of the day I felt we played well enough to get two.”

Marchessault becomes the first player in Golden Knight franchise history to achieve two 30-goal seasons, with the most recent occurring in 2021-22.
