At 30 years old, Howard is recovering from a foot injury that ended his last season prematurely. During the previous season, he participated in 13 games, recording only one interception, 12 passes defended, and 45 total tackles, with 36 of them being solo tackles. Additionally, he managed one tackle for loss and one quarterback hit.

Houston, which allowed the 10th most passing yards last season, could afford to bring in Howard for the short term. The Texans have over $67 million in cap space, though they also feature the most free agents at 38.

What is the current rate? Consider a contract of $22 million over two years, translating to an average annual salary of approximately $11 million. Caserio may need to contemplate this proposition.

It’s rumored that Howard could be looking for something more like four years at 75 million dollars.

The Texans require assistance at cornerback and might look to the draft at pick No. 23 to secure a lasting partner for their former third overall pick. Alternatively, they could opt to wait until Day 2, focusing on prospects such as Kamari Lassiter from Georgia, Kalen King from Penn State, or Kris Abrams-Draine from Missouri.

Howard’s reputation holds sway during negotiations, yet his performance on the field might lead to a decrease in his desired price. Positioned in between, the Texans could offer an optimal setting for Howard to make a comeback.

The same scenario applies to the other 31 franchises seeking a seasoned No. 2 defensive back to complement their primary cover corner, making it ultimately a matter of financial considerations.
