It’s incredibly challenging to overcome your past with an NFL team, and Jones’s tenure with the New England Patriots is a prime example. Despite being drafted 15th overall, he has failed to meet expectations. Initially showing promise as a rookie, his performance has sharply declined since then.
While he was initially well-liked, he gradually lost support within the organization. Moreover, the atmosphere in the quarterback room became toxic, to the extent that rookie Bailey Zappe sometimes had to study tape in the receiver room.
These are deep-rooted issues, some of which may be self-inflicted, and addressing them won’t be easy. Jerod Mayo, as a Patriots assistant, witnessed these problems firsthand. Simply put, the scars of Jones’s past won’t vanish overnight, especially among coaches and staff.
If Jones encounters challenges during the offseason, training camp, or early games, his history will inevitably be brought up. This creates a difficult environment for Jones to progress in and presents a daunting task for Mayo in his debut as head coach, as he attempts to steer the team in a new direction.
This is all considered without even factoring in the potential involvement of Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels, scenarios that could necessitate parting ways with Jones.
At this point, I think it could be a good idea to get Jones out of the AFC and on to an NFC squad that is developed and has a strong QB presence, as the back-up. The two teams that come to mind for me are the Los Angeles Rams or the Detroit Lions. Give the guy a season or two behind a solid quarterback in Stafford or Goff, with established young weapons.
The thought being that he can shake off the cob webs and learn something from one of these guys. If something were to happen, then Mac gets his shot at redemption. This might be the only way to salvage his name, after last year’s regression.
What do you think NFL fans? What is the best option for Jones going forward?
