Elmont, NY—On Tuesday night, Tomas Tatar secured the only goal in a shootout, leading the Seattle Kraken to a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders.

Matty Beniers found the net during regulation, while Philipp Grubauer’s 26 saves helped the Kraken end a three-game losing streak.

For the Islanders, Kyle Palmieri scored, but Ilya Sorokin’s 29 saves couldn’t prevent their second consecutive loss.

Tatar’s skillful moves and forehand shot proved decisive, as Islanders’ forwards Oliver Wahlstrom, Bo Horvat, and Mathew Barzal were all blanked in the shootout.

“I kind of panicked, to be honest,” Tatar said about his shootout move. “I had one move in my head and I was looking for a spot, it wouldn’t get open and I had to switch it last second. Glad it worked out but like I said, it was more of a panic move.”

In overtime, the Islanders faced a tripping penalty in the offensive zone, leading to Palmieri’s stint in the penalty box at 3:11. However, the advantage was short-lived as Jayden Schwartz’s slashing penalty at 4:28 nullified the power play.

During the second period at 14:37, Palmieri capitalized on a power play opportunity, knotting the score at 1-1. Barzal’s pass found Palmieri unmarked near the crease, extending Palmieri’s point streak to a career-best six games, with assistance from New York defenseman Noah Dobson.

Just before Palmieri’s goal to level the score, Sorokin thwarted Brandon Tanev’s short-handed breakaway with a crucial stop.

“I don’t think any one of us could be happy about this performance,” Islanders coach Patrick Roy said. “We missed that opportunity. There was no excuse for not playing a better hockey game than what we did.”

STADIUM SERIES LEGACY PROJECT

The Islanders, in collaboration with the Islanders Children’s Foundation and NHL, have unveiled a multiyear pledge to support diverse adaptive hockey initiatives. This commitment includes financial assistance for the Special Olympics New York, Long Island Rough Riders (sled hockey), and Long Island Blues (special hockey). Furthermore, the latter two organizations will also benefit from allocated ice time at The Park located at UBS Arena.

Up next the Isles host the Metropolitan Divisions top dawgs, the Rangers on Sunday in an outdoor clash at MetLife Stadium, as a part of the stadium series.
