On Thursday night at NFL Honors, Myles Garrett secured the defensive player of the year title. In response, Micah Parsons, the Cowboys’ edge rusher, not only extended his congratulations to Garrett but also shielded him from criticism, particularly from Steelers fans. Despite leading the league in sacks, the Steelers’ own edge rusher, T.J. Watt, came in second.

Parsons continued his defense of Garrett on Friday, suggesting that Watt may be harboring feelings of bitterness.

TJ Watt —- Myles Garrett

Watt, despite being present on radio row in Las Vegas earlier in the week, opted not to attend NFL Honors. Just before Garrett was announced as the winner, Watt posted a cryptic message implying his familiarity with such outcomes: “Nothing I’m not used to.”

“I’m Not a sore loser,” Parsons told Zach Gelb of CBS Sports. “People can say whatever they want, but the film does not lie. His presence is way more dominant than T.J. Watt, and that’s just the reality of it.”

Garrett garnered 23 out of 50 first-place votes, accumulating a total of 165 points, securing the top spot. Watt followed closely in second place with 19 first-place votes and 140 points, while Parsons trailed in third with 7 first-place votes and 89 points.

Watt maintained his dominance in sacks within the NFL, leading for the third time in four years by recording 19 sacks in 2023. This tally surpassed Jaguars edge rusher Josh Allen by 1.5 sacks and outpaced Parsons and Garrett by five sacks. Parsons doesn’t agreed though, that Watt is a top 5 pass rusher in the NFL.

“If you’re talking about best pure pass rusher, I would say if you look my win rate, I was the best one this year, so it would be me [No. 1],” Parsons said. “Then, I would say Myles. Then, I would say Maxx [Crosby]. Then, I would say Nick Bosa.

“I mean, look at the stats. The stats don’t lie. . . . I think [Watt] might have been fifth or sixth [in pass rush win rate and double team rate]. Alex Highsmith I think had a better pass rush rate and a more double team rate than T.J. Watt if you want to be statistical. This isn’t my stuff. I’m not just pulling this out of my hat. Like, look at the stats.”

Even after saying all of this publicly, Micah maintains there is no ill will towards TJ, but did not like his reaction to not winning the award.

What are your thoughts on this? Is TJ Watt a top 5 rusher?

Quote of the week

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
