The 2023-2024 NBA trade deadline has officially passed. This years trade deadline was not a very exciting one compared to years past. The most exciting moves seem to be Buddy Hield moving to the 76ers and PJ Washington to the Mavericks.
In a shocking decision the Los Angeles Lakers decided to stand firm with their current roster. That current roster is 9th in the Western conference and barely clinging to life above .500 with a record of 27-26.
The decision to do nothing whatsoever is a puzzling one, given the gaps that are currently in this team. Most notably the lack of consistent three-point shooting of offense and a subpar perimeter defense, with Jared Vanderbilt missing significant play time.
The recent play of D’Angelo Russell averaging 23.5 points and 6.4 assists over the last 11 games shows he is settling into his role with the Lakers and may play into this decision. Keeping this core team together is going to make for an interesting off season with Lebron James set to make a decision regarding his player option that could alter the course of this franchise for the foreseeable future.
While choosing to not make a trade may seem like a questionable move for now, it means that the Lakers will be going into the off-season armed to the teeth. They currently have 3 first round picks and 5 second round picks that can be moved around for a potential superstar player.
A short list of these players have been rumored to be Cleveland’s All-Star shooting guard Donovan Mitchell, Atlanta’s Trae young, and Lebron’s good friend Kyrie Irving.
If the Lakers are unable to get any trade done during the summer it will certainly have seemed like the wrong move here, but that is something only time can tell us.
