Las Vegas—Teofimo Lopez made a flashy entrance to the ring, accompanied by circus performers reminiscent of Hugh Jackman’s “The Greatest Showman,” complete with a top hat and ringmaster robe.

Despite the theatrical buildup, his junior welterweight title defense against Jamaine Ortiz turned out to be lackluster, drawing constant boos from the Mandalay Bay crowd.

In a fight where Teofimo was obviously frustrated and unable to figure out Jamaine Ortiz, both sides had as little offensive output as could be imagined. Lopez landed 78/364 or 21.4 % of his punches, and Ortiz landed 80/409 or 19.6 % of his punches.

To his credit, Lopez pushed the pace and controlled the center of the ring for much of the fight, where southpaw Ortiz continued to dance and avoided giving Teo any countering opportunities. I personally scored the fight as a draw, however the judges saw it way different. Below you can see the official card, 113-115, 113-115, and then a shocking 111-117.

The official score card

The champ managed to secure a unanimous decision victory, maintaining his WBO title at 140 pounds. However, he struggled to impress and was once again frustrated by a skilled southpaw boxer.
