Las Vegas—Chandler Stephenson’s go-ahead goal, combined with Adin Hill’s 30 saves, led the Vegas Golden Knights stand to stop the Edmonton Oilers’ 16-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory on Tuesday night.

Edmonton was hoping to tie the NHL record for the longest win streak set by the 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins.

With the game being tied 1-1 after two periods, Stephenson capitalized on a pass from Jonathan Marchessault, firing a shot from the center of the left circle past Edmonton goalie Stuart Skinner’s blocker side, putting the Golden Knights ahead by a goal less than two minutes into the third period.

Hill then showcased stellar goaltending and his NHL leading save percentage all night long , preventing the Oilers from scoring and maintaining the crowd’s energy until the final buzzer.

“I know that they’re hot over there and they had won however many in a row, but I was more focused on just playing our game tonight and trying to get two points,” Hill said. “It’s a big rivalry and for us to do it with a couple guys that were missing in our lineup is huge.”

William Karlson and Nic Roy also netted goals for VGK.

After starting the season with a dismal record of 3-9-1 and making a coaching change by firing Jay Woodcroft on Nov. 12, the Edmonton Oilers were struggling at 13-15-1.

We’re back in the hunt, and we’re not content by any means,” Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse said. “I think we worked hard to get ourselves into this position, but we lost tonight to a team in our division that we played a lot over the last couple years. It’s gonna leave a bad taste in our mouths.”

However, since the beginning of their impressive win streak on Dec. 19, they haven’t suffered a single loss, improving to a remarkable 29-16-1 record. Under coach Kris Knoblauch, who took over on Nov. 13, the Oilers have excelled with an NHL-leading 26-7-0 record, winning 24 of their last 27 games and rising to third place in the Pacific Division.
