Toronto—On Monday night, former Toronto forward Pierre Engvall returned to score a late goal, securing a 3-2 victory for the New York Islanders against the Maple Leafs.
Kyle MacLean and Mathew Barzal also added goals for the Islanders, while goalie Ilya Sorokin made 35 saves.

Toronto’s captain, John Tavares, managed to tie the game on the power play with 4:48 left in the third period, with Mitch Marner also finding the net for Toronto.
Then late in the third period, Engvall’s decisive goal came with just 2:02 remaining, breaking a 2-2 tie and ending the Maple Leafs’ three-game winning streak. The win leveled new Islanders head coach Patrick Roy’s record at 2-2-1.
Despite outshooting the Islanders 37-29, Toronto fell short, with Auston Matthews hitting both posts with a shot in the opening minute of the third period.

Ilya Samsonov made 26 saves in his fourth consecutive start for Toronto.
The game saw some intense moments, including a fight between Bo Horvat and Maple Leafs defender Simon Benoit, leading to a four-on-four situation where Marner capitalized on a pass from Tavares to score.
Matthews extended his point streak to seven games with a secondary assist on Marner’s goal. The Islanders regained the lead shortly after when rookie Kyle MacLean scored on a breakaway pass from Cal Clutterbuck.
Notably, Marner, Matthews, William Nylander, and Morgan Rielly had previously teamed up for the winning side in the NHL all-star weekend three-on-three event in Toronto.
Final score 3-2 Isles. Up next the Islanders start a 4-game home stand against the Lightning Thursday night.
