Embiid is anticipated to be absent for an extended duration, though a more specific timeline won’t be available until doctors finish the procedure, according to sources.

Embiid, 29, has a history of knee injuries. H previously undergone season-ending surgery on his left meniscus in 2016-17, and missing Game 5 of the 2021 first-round playoff series due to a small meniscus tear in his right knee.

His recent 22-game streak of scoring at least 30 points was halted due to the meniscus injury sustained during a game against the Golden State Warriors, where forward Jonathan Kuminga inadvertently fell on his knee.

This setback comes at an unfortunate juncture for both Embiid and the Sixers, as the All-Star center, currently leading the NBA in scoring with 35.3 points per game, was poised to achieve a rare statistical milestone.

Embiid was on track to join Wilt Chamberlain as the only other player in history to average at least 35 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists in a single season. Additionally, he’s the sole player, besides Chamberlain in 1961-62, to maintain a scoring rate of at least one point per minute played.

The Philadelphia 76ers have struggled in Embiid’s absence, losing 10 out of 14 games this season without him. Despite their challenges, they maintain a record of 30-18 and hold the fifth position in the Eastern Conference. Notably, the team boasts a significantly better record of 26-8 when Embiid is on the court.

Unfortunately, Embiid’s current injury leaves him well below the league’s 65-game threshold required for postseason awards, with only 34 games played so far.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
