According to sources briefed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Washington Commanders have selected Dan Quinn, the current defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, as their new head coach.

Quinn steps in for Ron Rivera, who was dismissed by the team’s new owner, Josh Harris, immediately following the end of the season. Additionally, Adam Peters was appointed as the general manager on January 12. These selections mark the initial major personnel decisions made by Harris since acquiring the team in July.

The selection process was no easy work for the team. The discussion started in-house with offensive coordinator, Eric Bieniemy. Washington also conducted interviews with Mike Macdonald, who ultimately took the head coaching position with the Seattle Seahawks.

They also engaged in discussions with Aaron Glenn, the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, Anthony Weaver, the associate head coach/defensive line coach for the Baltimore Ravens, and Bobby Slowik, the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans.

Under Quinn, the Cowboys led the NFL with 93 forced turnovers. Dallas was fifth in points and seventh in yards in the NFL. Quinn previously served as head coach of the Falcons from 2015-2020, making a Super Bowl appearance in 2016.

Quinn faces a significant task ahead in Washington. The Commanders concluded last season with a record of 4-13, and they have not had a winning season since 2016. Furthermore, their last playoff victory dates back to the 2005 season.

The last head coach in Washington to have a winning record was George Allen. Let’s see if Dan is up for the task.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
