There was a time not too long ago the Atlantic Coast Conference was to College Basketball what the SEC is to College Football. March would see 8 or 9 schools make it to the NCAA Tournament annually. So what has happened to change the narrative of the conference when it comes to basketball?
The easiest answer might be the one and done’s. But there is little doubt that the ACC just isn’t as deep a league as it used to be. Duke and North Carolina are the only teams ranked in the Top 25 as we enter the last 6 weeks of the Regular season. Even more surprising, Bracketology guru Joe Lunardi only has Clemson currently joining the Blue Devils and Tar Heels in the field of 68.
To put it in perspective, The Big 12 and SEC have 10 and 8 teams respectively believed to be in the field as of this past weekend. While things obviously can change between now and Selection Sunday it looks like a really down year on the hardwood for the conference.
