Transparency……long time Noles fan. Became even more so in 1991 when they accepted a hand in marriage with the ACC. A stable home and clear rivals going forward. In those times talk of 16 team super-sized mega conferences was like talking about hoverboards and flying cars.

Lee Corso says not so fast my friend!

We are one foot into what Sports Illustrated predicted long ago in the 90’s. The Super Conference Era is here.

The college football has always been a cutthroat band of haves and have not. Conferences offered the mirage of stable homes with 2 parents and a car in the garage. As the Noles looked to the ACC, it came at the expense of wrecking the home of nearby BigEast Conference.

Similar homes were wrecked for inhabitants of the Big 8, Big 12, Pac 12, and possibly the ACC. The haves and have nots was mostly a conference level distinction. While you had a Texas and Oklahoma sharing the space with Baylor, you lived and died with your conference. Now the distinction or should I say extinction level is on the individual school level.

Florida State is looking at the front door with bags packed. They are ready to go “Burning Bed” to leave their once comfortable home along the Atlantic coastal seaboard. How will this happen?

Big Ten information College football fan (@Genetics56) has been on the ground level of the many stipulations and scenarios for FSU and any other ACC school looking to play David against the GOR Goliath.

GOR or the Grant of Rights deal put in place by the ACC to prevent such defections is a huge roadblock for teams looking to do to the ACC what was done to the Big East and other conferences of the past.

A move by FSU would be in the ballpark of 130 million dollars. That is the proverbial tip of the iceberg as they could then face an estimated 520 million in penalties.

The move could be so drastic, talk has speculated that the Noles would possibly have to make an SMU-like deal where they would forfeit their future conference (B1G 10 or SEC) earnings for years into the future to make up for this fee.

As the Power 5 era is moving closer to P2, a round of musical chairs is slowly coming into being. In it’s wake are wrecked homes and relationships. How can the Noles coexist with the ACC going forward if the GOR holds the line?

What about the schools peaking around the corner looking at the fight brewing with the bad sibling arguing with the parents in the ACC trying to keep the family together. Think of your younger brothers and sisters? What kind of example are you setting?

FSU indeed appears to be influencing its younger siblings pushing for more dissent and possible challenges to the GOR. If enough schools agree to flee the house, the ACC will have to fold. The ACC is banking on lower profile schools having few partners to join with the same attraction as they have with tv contracts driving the landscape going forward.

The Nole’s next phase in their existence will either be as unhappy partners in the ACC until 2036 or when their tv contract ends sooner than this. That could trigger a mass exodus and the end of the ACC as we know it.

If successful, the Noles may end up in their own backyard in the SEC or moving to the cooler climates of the B1G Ten. As a fan, I love them in the ACC. Bobby Bowden gravitated towards the ACC over the SEC because of a clearer path to the #1 ranking.

It is clear now however that this thinking is outdated and can lead to being left behind. An expanded playoff field makes either move viable.

The SEC makes the most sense geographically. The B1G Ten is the most exciting and flashy with opponents and markets all over the country including Los Angeles. Either way, they will have to tread lightly down the sideline trying not to step out of bounds which could come at a hefty price for their school and program going forward.

Quote of the week

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
