According to multiple sources, including ESPN and sources within the program, Ohio State is going to hire long time coach Bill O’Brien to be the new offensive coordinator for the football program.
O’Brien has spent decades in both the college and NFL, as head coach, coordinator, and position coach. He also has front office experience in the NFL as well.
He was head coach at Penn State, from 2012-2013, where he went 15-9 in the two seasons, following legendary coach Joe Paterno being fired amid the Sandusky Scandal.
He was the head coach of the Houston Texans from 2014 to 2020, where he went 52-48 in his time there. In his seven seasons there, the Texans made the playoffs on four occasions and had five winning seasons.
His coaching career started in 1993, where he was the tight ends coach for Brown University. He became the inside linebackers coach the following year.
He was a grad assistant at Georgia Tech, spending time as their running backs coach, quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator from 1995-2002.
He then spent two seasons as the running backs coach at Maryland from 03-04 and then was the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at Duke from 05-06.

He then got his first job at the NFL level with the New England Patriots, under head coach Bill Belichick. O’Brien was an offensive assistant in 07, the wide receivers coach in 08, quarterbacks coach in 09-10, and was the offensive coordinator for the Patriots in 11.
He left for Penn State, and then was hired as the Texans head coach. After being fired as the HC, he was then given the General Manager job of the Texans for the 2020 season.
He returned to the college ranks, where he was the offensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide for two seasons 21-22, under Nick Saban.
He returned to the New England Patriots where he was the offensive coordinator this past season.
He will now be tasked with to run a Buckeyes offense that returns WR Emeka Egbuka and HB TreVeyon Henderson. Ohio State also got Kansas State QB Will Howard as well as Ole Miss’ two-time SEC all-conference HB Quinshon Judkins.
