This is one of those moments where I have to simply report the facts and not let my personal feelings get in the way.
According to multiple sources, including Ian Rapaport, Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski has fired running backs coach Stump Mitchell.
Mitchell was hired by former Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens in 2019, and was the last remaining “holdover” from that staff.
Mitchell is very well liked in the locker room by the players and the staff at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
He is regarded as one of the best position coaches in the entire league by many players and other coaches.
This move comes on the heels of a disappointing ending to the Browns season, with a 45-14 butt whipping in the AFC Wildcard Game against the Houston Texans.
The Browns lost Pro Bowl starting HB Nick Chubb in the 2nd game of the season against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
It was a running back by committee approach since then. Jerome Ford got the bulk of the carries with Kareem Hunt and Pierre Strong Jr chipping in as well.
Stump is a not only a great coach, but a polite, courteous, and humble man. It was my pleasure to have met and talked to him on three different occasions.
I wish him good luck and godspeed wherever he ends up next.
I can’t foresee Stump being on the market for long. Any team would be lucky to have him on their staff.
Tight ends coach T.C. McCartney did not have his contract renewed, so he is now on the market.
