Elmont, NY—Barzal netted the winning goal just 21 seconds into overtime, backed by Ilya Sorokin’s 32 saves, as the New York Islanders came from behind to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 on Thursday night.
Barzal finished the comeback with his 12th goal of the season, having assisted on the initial three goals. Kyle Palmieri, Alexander Romanov, and Bo Horvat contributed goals, while defenseman Noah Dobson recorded four assists.

Auston Matthews, the standout for Toronto, scored a goal 26 seconds into the second period, providing Toronto with a 2-1 lead. Shortly after, at 2:40, he skillfully placed a backhand shot past Sorokin, securing his league-leading 33rd goal and extending Toronto’s lead to 3-1.
At 4:18 into the second period, Romanov narrowed the gap, and Horvat equalized with another power-play goal, bringing his season total to 17 goals.
Palmieri gave the Islanders an early lead by scoring 40 seconds into the game, beating Martin Jones with a power-play goal. The Islanders have now notched 28 power-play goals, approaching their total from the previous season, which was seven goals higher.
The Islanders won both of the last 2 matches against Toronto.
The Islanders are at Nashville on Saturday.
